Here is the poem for this week. Another grammar themed poem before we begin to look at poems that focus on places! Enjoy!
The Grammar Lesson by Steve Kowit
A noun's a thing. A verb's the thing it does.
An adjective is what describes the noun.
In "The can of beets is filled with purple fuzz"
of and with are prepositions. The's
an article, a can's a noun,
a noun's a thing. A verb's the thing it does.
A can can roll-or not. What isn't was
or might be, might meaning not yet known.
"Our can of beets is filled with purple fuzz"
is present tense. While words like our and us
are pronouns- i.e. it is moldy, they are icky brown.
A noun's a thing; a verb's the thing it does.
Is is a helping verb. It helps because
filled isn't a full verb. Can's what our owns
in "Our can of beets is filled with purple fuzz."
See? There's almost nothing to it. Just
memorize these rules... or write them down!
A noun's a thing, a verb's the thing it does.
The can of beets is filled with purple fuzz.

Happy Reading!
I really like this one! :) It was funny and it rhymed, like when it rhymed fuzz. Fuzz is beast, I like that word. It also described the rules in a cool way. I definately understand grammar after reading that amazing, incredible, fantastic poem. :D
ReplyDeleteThis poem was really interesting. I learned what a noun and a verb does. It was also a little confusing. The phrase "Our can of beets is filled with purple fuzz" threw me off guard. Well over all the poem was great!!!
ReplyDeletewow this is a confusing poem, well i guess it's because its the end of the day. It has good sentence structure but i just did not get the phrase..."The can of beets filled with purple fuzz"... In my case it just doesn't seem like a good sentence to use to show the parts of a sentence. Over all it seems like a good poem, but the rhymy words would be icy chill if you know what im layin down on the flip flop later...-Addison Helms
ReplyDeleteWell, it is better than last week's poem. It is still very hard to follow; I guess its because the sentences do not end with the lines. Maybe if it were a bit more poetic I would like it more, but for now, I am not very fond of this poem.
ReplyDelete<^_^> Savannah
This was so awesome, reading it made me smile and laugh. I love the wordplay and how the author uses the same words in a bunch of different ways. It was so beastly to read, and I thought it was so cool. <3 this poem.
ReplyDeletePs,there's a typo in the second bullet of this post.
<3 Nancy (Athene ;))
Oh yeah, and this was sooooooo confuzzling before I really looked at it and tried to understand it. It's just not normal poetry ;)
ReplyDelete<3 Nancy (Athene ;))
The poem is a poem of learning. The lesson to be learned is the ways of grammar. This poem is a great poem to read i will recomend it to read! :)
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, it was kind of confusing the way it jumped around, and I did'nt enjoy it. The flowing of the words was not that great, and I did'nt find it interesting. However, it was creative and better than last week's poem. It did'nt help me to gain knowledge about grammar, but still it was okay.
ReplyDeletethe poem was hard to understand a little sometime. But it did teach me a little bit about a noun and a verb. i didnt get the fuzz part though. Its something good to remember though for a little help on a noun and verb.=]Daniel taverna
ReplyDeleteYeahh haha I kinda didnt get the fuzz part either but over all the poem taught me a little more about verbs and nouns. It is helpful when it comes to rembering what a verb and noun is.
ReplyDelete*Sam McGill*
It is very confusing untill you get the hang of it. If i read this a couople of times it would make more sence than if you read it once. By mimorizing this poem it would probably help knowing the difference between nouns and verbs! :)
ReplyDeleteOK...this poem was like a school lesson to me...i actually dont think its a normal poem...its just a lesson to be taught..but i cant say i liked it or not because it doesnt matter if you like a lesson or not...you still learn(if you payed attention to the poem, which i did:))but yea...
ReplyDeleteI guess im done...im so nice:)..yea its true...byeee
I didnt really know what the heck the poem whas talking about other than a few grammar terms????I liked last weeks poem better. This one was really hard to follow. It didnt rhyme closely enogh so the entire poem didnt flow. By the time you read the word that rhymes with previous one you have forgotton all about it! The fuzz thing seemed overly repetative and after like the millionth time it was just like hunh are we still talking about grammar. The author shouldve at least tried to make it look and sound like a poem other than just a bunch of related sentences jumbled together.
ReplyDeleteIt was very creative and amusing. It was also descriptive of what nouns and verbs and adjectives are, which is helpful. I myself thought it was captive with the way it keeps the reader informed. Overall its an interesting poem that I won't soon forget.
ReplyDeletei didnt like the poem. it was very confusing. But i did learn from it. I learn what a noun is and what a verb is. It linked the two together by using repitition. It would've been better it it rhymed
ReplyDeleteThis poem was quite educational. I felt that it was very confusing and it made want to take a nap. I do like how he used some words that not only adultkas would use such as "icky," and "fuzz". One thing that confused me very much was the rhyme scheme. In conclusion it wasnt the most entertsimimg or amusing poem i've read.
ReplyDeleteKhalil
I really liked the poem!! At first I was a little confused, but then I started to understand it. This poem did make me understand it all alot more, I will not forget "Our can of beets is filled with purple fuzz" so I dont think I will forget about this very soon. This poem did make a good point and explain it all well in a fun, creative way. - Kaitly Henderson
ReplyDeleteThis one really confused me, the plot was all over the place, I couldn't follow it. However, I liked how it talked about mold in description. I think it would be better if the plot was more flowing and easier to follow. I did learn about verbs and nouns though.
ReplyDeletehey! yah i didnt like it. like i kinda zoned out after the hmmm..... third line? yah thats right! i mean it was hard to follow and made absolutly NOOOOO sense!!! like it wasnt even funny :-P sorry... maybe the next poem will be more the shiz :) (the SHIZ part was for Miranda hehehe)
ReplyDelete-your very loving... Flying Janitor :)
That was... confusing. I kept losing track of my spot and zoning out. I don't think I'll ever forget the thing with the beets and purple fuzz, though.
ReplyDeleteThe poem was a little confusing. I liked how it gave me help with understanding nouns and verbs and prepositions. I still think it would have been better if it rhymed, but I know that not all poems rhyme! I definitely think that it was better than last weeks poem. :D :p :)
ReplyDeleteI thought it was ok, but a little confusing. I could hear the rhyming(sp?), but it was kind of hard to tell with the sentences all mashed together. It did kind of help cleaer up grammar stuff though. But why purple fuzz?
ReplyDeleteEmily
I thought that this poem was helping and very creative. I liked how the author kept saying, "a noun's a thing. A verb's the thing it does." I also liked how the author kept with one example and explained it, he didn't just keep giving different examples which helped me personally understand the poem more. But overall I enjoyed this poem very much.
ReplyDeleteCasey Jeanfreau
This poem is kind of boring and is just teaching me about nouns, verbs ect. it's not that i did not like the poem and it was very helpful in helping me understand but it was boaring. The poem would have been beter it had rhymed of had some energy to it. thank you for the poem.
ReplyDelete-Liam
I liked the poem it was really unique the purple fuzz thing was random and frankly i love anything random so yeah good poem more interesting than last week (=
ReplyDeleteThis poem was very fun and creative. I enjoyed this poem for numerous reasons. First of all it grabbed my attention very easily.
ReplyDeleteSecond I actuallly learned some new cool and intresting facts. I also liked it because I can use it in real life. I really enjoyed this poem.
VICTORIA HAYES!!!!!.....
A little confusing was it supposed to rhyme? It did tell a lot about nouns and verbs but it was hard to follow. I guess purple fuzz is a mold.
ReplyDeleteI really thought the poem was better than the last one, but harder to understand because it talks about one thing and than changes to something else. But you are able to understand the diffrences between a noun a verb and an ajetive.
ReplyDeleteI thought that the poem was a little confusing after a little while. I did think it was kind of neat of how the author was able to put the noun is a thing and the other parts of speech in the poem. It helped to put examples of the parts of speech. When I got to the part of the purple fuzz, I got a little lost.
ReplyDelete-Andrew Simpson
I enjoyed this poem a lot more than the first; I think it’s because I understood it more. I found the phrase “The can of beets is filled with purple fuzz” hilarious and memorable. I also noticed that the poet repeated “A noun's a thing. A verb's the thing it does.” which to me was saying that the poet really wanted us to remember that. All in all I enjoyed this poem and thought it was actually kind of funny with the crazy sentence.
ReplyDeleteAUGH! Another "poem" that dosn't rhyme. This one wasn't nearly as good as the last one. Is there nothing more interesting the author could have written about than this? Copying a grammer lesson word for word and arranging it into lines isn't poetry. There isn't much artistic value to this poem. Since I was expecting a good poem this one was dissapointing.
ReplyDeletethe poem was a little hard to get and it was a little confusing but i read it with music on
ReplyDeleteI didn't like it because i could not follow it. It was really confusing. But it rhymed with the purple fuzz. I don't know what i really thought of it because i didn't get it.
ReplyDeleteI really didn't under stand this poem very well. It was really strange. It was hard to follow. It was confusing... especially this line. A can can roll-or not. What isn't was
ReplyDeleteor might be, might meaning not yet known.
"Our can of beets is filled with purple fuzz"
I didnt like this poem at all. I liked last weeks a lot more than i did with this one. I thought it was really confusing other than some of the grammer words. If the author would have made it more clear then it probably would have been much better.
ReplyDeleteBy: Katlyn McAnally
I thought that the poem was okay but a little hard to read. To help me understand it better i read it as if it was a paragraph and not a poem, even though it was hard because it is in poem form. The poem could help me study one day so its not all bad.
ReplyDelete-madison keller 6th
This poem was not that good to me. It wasnt because i couldnt understand it. I liked the part that helped me memorize the nouns and verbs. This poem was ok!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis poem was ok. It discribed the partof a sentence. This peom was average. I did learn one thing:
ReplyDelete"A noun's a thing, a verb's the thing it does."
JUCA
I didnt like the poem. It seamed like it tried to give the facts and not make it poetic. I liked last weeks poem better. This poem was also confusing! I hardly could follow, but i though that the format was nicely organized.
ReplyDelete~sara damas~
This wasent really a poem to me it was more of a teaching lesson but anyway i did read it and i think this is a run on sentence but im just going to keep typing to see if you catch this.
ReplyDeleteWell, Robert, I'm somewhat sad that you think that I don't read all of the comments on our blog. You did reply with a run-on sentence and only one sentence instead of at least four as the directions state. I hope that you will catch this and will amend your comment or comment again so that you can receive full credit for your comments.
ReplyDeletecool poem.i loved the way the author explained things.it also mad me think.
ReplyDeleteI thought this poem was pretty confusing. But after you read it a couple times, it's easier to understand. I thought it was pretty creative how he put the example and all the terms into the poem. I don't think i'll forget "a noun's a thing, a verb's a thing it does."
ReplyDeleteThis poem was really cool.It was kinda confusing at first, but it got a lot better.I like how it picks certain things to reprsent what it wants to talk about.Over all it's a really good poem.
ReplyDelete-Hayley Ross
This poem is more confusing than the last one to me. It took me forever to make some sense out of it. It was more confusing to me because each line did not end a sentence which made it hard for me to put everything into a complete thought. One positive thing from this is that I will never forget that the noun is a thing and that the verb is what it does.
ReplyDeleteI liked this one better than last weeks. The repitition kind of made it boring, though. There was a better sense of rhyme. I definitely know "a noun's a thing." This poem was pretty much one stanza just rephrased in every other stanza.
ReplyDeleteI really liked this poem. In some ways it was kinda funny. It was way better than last weeks poem and it got things across. It made sense and if i didn't know what a noun was, then i would have definetly know what a noun is now. =)
ReplyDeleteChelsey A.
I really did not like the poem that much, but it liked it more than the one last week, probably the one nexy week weilll be better!!!. It was kind of hard to understand at first but after a cuple of times i undersoood it better. It might help me on my Grammar. :D
ReplyDeleteEm. R.
Hmmm if you go up about 6 posts it seems to me thats about 1 sentence... but ill say some more. I thought the poem was great and amusing and a completly worth my time. good choice ms mathis
ReplyDeleteTo me, this was a very dull and boring poem. It was very confusing and made no sence to me. It didnt even sound like a poem at all. I like poems that rhyme because they are easier to understand and more fun. I think you should choose a rhyming poem for next weeks. :)
ReplyDeleteMiranda Symons
In my opinion i personally didn't like the poem because it was kind of confusing. I liked the purple fuzz and the can can part. I think that a poem should rhyme and actually draw the readers into it.
ReplyDeleteI thought this poem was alright. It was still a little bit confusing. I like this poem more then the one last week but this poem was still weird. I didnt think it made a lot of sence. It could have been a lot better. :)
ReplyDeleteThis poem was alot better then the last one! I liked how it actually gave some examples. This poem was a little bit more entertaining and easier to understand. This poem is good =]
ReplyDeleteMica Clark
This poems was much better. I like how it gave the example and then explained it. I also liked how it gave present tense and past tense. I was a little hard to understand, but it also gives important information about nouns and verbs. Way better poem than the last one.
ReplyDeleteIt was a little confusing, but some parts were easy to understand. It teaches you parts of grammar and it was overall an okay poem.
ReplyDeleteI liked the poem. Iliked the way it repeated the sentence just to drill it in our heads. It was a little confusing. sorry it was late i had to make another account just to log on.
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm getting half credit. I don't neccesarily like these type of poems, just because they make no sense to me. I don't really like poems unless they rhyme usually.
ReplyDeleteThis poem thing was a little odd I thought. I wasnt the biggest fan of it. I think the grammar poem before this was better. O and this one said A nouns a thing a verbs what it does way too much lol.
ReplyDeleteJustin Noote
i didnt really like it because i dont like poems. it was a little confusing. it helped me learn more about nouns and verbs.
ReplyDeleteThis is a boaring poem like the other. Thoe this poem is diffrent in a way. It describes grammar in a way I could easely understand. This is a better poem.
ReplyDeleteGreg Trykowski
I didn't really like the poem, I liked the word fuzz in it. The reason I didn't like the poem is because I never really liked poetry, though it did make me laugh with the "purple fuzz".
ReplyDeleteMichael Holland
I didn't like the poem. It was just real confusing, like the line that said "What isn't was or might be" was something I had to read a few times until I figured out what it meant. Also, I mainly like poems that rhyme on every or every other line. In the end I just didn't like the poem.
ReplyDeleteZack Black [WITH A "K" NOT "H"]
well....nice poem, even though it sounds more like a song than a poem. but i like how you like mixed english and literature/reading together.
ReplyDeleteTHIS ONE WAS A LOT MORE DIFFERENT.. I GUESS YOU CAN SAY THAT THIS WASN'T MY FAVORITE. THE POEM KINDA CONFUSED ME AND MISLED ME. I HOPE THE NEXT POEM WILL BE BETTER AND LESS ODD LOL.
ReplyDelete
