This is the first of many peoms that I will post on our blog and ask my students to comment on. I would like you to read the poem and then click comment at the bottom of the post. Leave a comment of at least four sentences telling me what you thought about the poem. You do not have to like it, but you have to tell me WHY you didn't (or did) think it was a "good" poem. I will check the comments on Friday August 28.
THE STUDENT THEME by Ronald Wallace
The adjectives all ganged up on the nouns,
insistent, loud, demanding, inexact,
their Latinate constructions flashing. The pronouns
lost their referents: They were dangling, lacked
the stamina to follow the prepositions' lead
in, on, into, to, toward, for, or from.
They were deset by passive voices and dead
metaphors, conjunctions shouting But! or And!
The active verbs were all routinely modified
by adverbs, that endlessly and colorlessly ran
into trouble with the participles sitting
on the margins knitting their brows like gerunds
(dangling was their problem, too). The author
was nowhere to be seen; was off somewhere.

ReplyDeleteI sort've liked the poem. The good thing about it was that the writer did use a clever choice of words to modify different parts of speech and their meanings. The bad thing was that I though it was too short. The ending was too quick. You really have to read it a couple times before you can get the ending sentence. A poem should flow and be understood the first time.
ReplyDeleteIm torn in between. I liked the work of litterature, because it was cleaver. Ive never thought of parts of a sentence in that way. However I didnt like it, because a poem is supposed to reach people. I wasnt worthy of the title poem.(Thats why i called it a work of litterature). Poems have to relate to people and have people relate to it. Its supposed to beable to reach somekind of audence.
ReplyDeleteThis poem was pretty cool but it took me a couple times to get what it ment. It probily would have been better if the whole thing actually rhymed. Poems that don't rhyme seem kind of pointless to me. It is pretty cool how it makes grammer seem like a complex process kind of like how one would describe a machine. In writing it is sometimes very hard to make everything flow just right. Who wants to know what my favorite poem is? I'll give you a hint: Its about an oven.
ReplyDelete^ who writes a poem about an oven? muffin man?
ReplyDeleteI really like the cleverness of this poem, but the wording confused me the first time I read it. I feel that words should flow easily and understandably. If your audience doesn't get it, they won't enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteI thought that this poem used the parts of grammar creatively, but I did'nt really care for it otherwise. It seemed hard to grasp it's meaning and it jumped from one thing to another too quickly. I also agree that a poem should flow or rhyme or else it's not as memorable. This poem didn't really have an impact on me as the reader like it should.
ReplyDeleteI thought the poem was dumb!!!! Well, even if a poem doesnt rhyme, it should be deep and hit home with a good, deep meaning and this poem was rather silly in my opinion.. But it was pretty clever i guess and the author did a good job writing about something like grammer. :)
ReplyDeletei thought the poem was bland. It was missing that ryhming flavour.Sorry to say i was dissapointed. Long live cat in the Hat.
ReplyDeleteUm...I really didnt get or understand the peom. It didnt make much sence to me. I know its about like nouns and stuff but I didnt understand what ws happening.I think that this poem should be writen so that everyone can understand it the first time they read it.
ReplyDeleteI don't really like poems, because they make me want to fall asleep, but this poem was not bad. I could see a little video playing in my head. Just like that video about prepositions. I could actually hear your voice inside my head Ms. Mathis. Over all I enjoyed the poem.
ReplyDelete~Molly Hall~
I didn't like this poem. As a poet myself, I disagree with some of the others that it HAS to rhyme. It doesn't need to if that isn't the intention of the writer. However, I do believe it should have more flow to it. It doesn't quite make sense to me.
ReplyDeleteThis poem is confusing to me. I have read it several times and still don’t understand all of it. To me the poem didn’t flow well, which may be one reason why I only understand part of it. I have yet to figure out what the title and the poem have in common. I also want to say that poems don’t have to rhyme, but it dose seem to me that if they do rhyme they are more memorable.
ReplyDeleteI like the poem but i wish it would have rhymed. I think that when a poem rhymes it make it easier to understand. Even though poems do not have to rhyme i prefer when they do.

This poem was suppose to be a cute liitle poem about grammer, but i'm not sure i really got it. it was confusing beacause i didnt understand alot of the words. It didnt make sense to me. I did not liek this poem.
ReplyDeleteI didn't like the poem because it was confusing, and a poem should be easy to read and not confusing. Also there was no rhyme at all. The last line was very confusing. I had to read it several times before I understood it.
ReplyDeleteI liked the poem in genearl, but at times it was hard to understand. It was a little corny, and i had to read it back three times. Becasue it was harder to follow than most poems, i had a harder time figuring out the concept. Please in the furture choose poems with a ryme
ReplyDeleteI thought that this poem was quite entertaining. I enjoyed how you gave the figures of speech personifications such as "dangled" or "knitting their brows". I also enjoy how you included almost every part of speech in your poem/story. Though the one thing i didn't like was the fact that it had a confusing rhyme scheme.
ReplyDeleteThese are great comments! I like the analysis and good thoughts that y'all are providing. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteI didn't really like it that much. The words didn't flow very well. The way the sentences ran on to the next line made it hard to tell when the line ended. If the poem flowed more smoothly, I would have liked it more.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was clever. I liked the way he used personification. It was like grammar is another world. I liked the slant rhyme, because it seemed to flow better.
ReplyDeleteI did not like this poem very much. It was kind of confusing and I had to read it a couple times before I understood it. I think it should have a better beginning and ending. Maybe then it would be better?
ReplyDeleteI really didnt like this poem. I think poems that rhyme are more interesting. Over all I think I didnt like the poem is because I didnt understand it. But oh well maybe the next one will be better.
ReplyDeleteIt was not the best poem. It was too confusing and it didn't really rhyme. I really don't know what the poem was talking about at all. I think it could have been better.
ReplyDeleteThis poem wasn't my favorite. It was kind of confusing. I didn't like it a whole lot because it didn't rhyme. I know that not all poems are supposed to, but I enjoy reading poems better if they do rhyme. If the author had written it to make more sense, I might have enjoyed it. I noticed that lots of people wrote about not liking it because it didn't rhyme, and I agree with them.
ReplyDeleteKatie O. 6th
I liked the poem because it was interesting. I thought of the preposition poem when i read it. The one thing i didn't like about it was the ending, I thought it went a bit to quick. Overall i liked the poem.
ReplyDelete**Katlyn McAnally**
I'm sorry, but I didn't like it. The poem confused me and it had to many words that didn't sound right. It wasn't that bad, I just didn't know what it was saying. I read it a couple times, but I couldnt seem to get what everything meant.
ReplyDeleteThe poem was confusing and took me a while to figure out what it meant. I think the words should have flowed a little better. It's hard to make sense of what it said but after a few times its a little more clear. It could have been a lot better with that idea.
ReplyDeleteI liked the poem a lot. It was informative and interesting almost like a short story. There were also parts that were funny. Overall it was a great poem.
ReplyDeleteSHAMAR WILLIAMS
I thought it was kinda funny. I like the part about them ganging up. Other than that it was odd. Also it was just plain wierd, i dont really like it.
ReplyDeleteJustin Noote
I thought it was very nice. It had a little bit of mystery in it. It was very unique. And also, I like the part where the author was missing and they couldn't find him.
ReplyDeleteLittle Taverna
I thought it was pretty neat. I think it would be really hard to write a poem about grammar! It was cool how they said the author was missing. It added an air of mystery.
ReplyDeleteEmily
I liked the adjectives all ganged up on the nouns part of this poem. That is humorous. This poem was very creative. I also like the verbs are surrounded by adverbs part that is so true.
ReplyDelete-Will Bryson
I thought that this poem was creative, and a little confusing. I couldn't understand the point that the author was trying to get across. I couldn't figure out the theme of the poem. If the author would have explained it more in the poem then I probably would have enjoyed it more.
ReplyDeleteCasey
The poem was very creative. I nuderstood the poem for the most part, but then i got a little confused. I really liked how he took english terms and made them creative. I can honestly say i enjoyed the poem.
ReplyDeletevictoria hayes
I like this poem, because it makes parts of speach act like gangsters. I also thought it was funny that it said "The Author was nowhere to be seen; was off somewhere.".It was neat that it says a little bit about what each part of speach does to descibe how they're acting. However some parts didn't make sense until I reviewed it several times, with that said it was good but could have been better, but like I said at the beginning of this comment I liked it
ReplyDelete-Brandon Rader
I really enjoyed this poem. I thought this poem was very reative and interesting. I kind of got confused in the middle of the poem but then cought back up. I can honestly say that I enjoyed this poem.
ReplyDeleteThe first paragraph did not make sence to me. I thought it was bringing the words to life but the second paragraph cleared it all up. I think that (judging by the second) this poem was really funny. The author must really enjoy grammar!
ReplyDelete- Emerald Garrett
I thought the poem was kind of weird. I personally did not like it. I like poems but this one was very confusing; it took me a while to figure it out. It could have been a lot better.
ReplyDelete~courtney allen~
I was not very sure about what to think of this poem. The words in it are very advanced. It seems as if this poem would tell a story. Reading this poem a few more times made it alot better.
ReplyDeleteMica Clark (:
I don't like english so i don't like poems, just never liked this language.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the poem because the author explaind how a sentence is put together but it took me four times to read it and acually understand it but other than that i really liked the poem. It had good rythem and it was kind of like a story.
ReplyDeleteThe way the poem sounds to sounds a lot a like our school and society. With everyone or thing getting ganged up on some way or form!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWell...I actually thought the poem was great...but i didnt really know the definition of most words...and thats the reason why i'm in school is to learn but anyways...the poem was real artistic in a literary way and i like that...kutos on this person, i applaued them:).....
ReplyDeleteIt was a pretty good poem. My only problem with it was how short it was. Other than that, it was pretty creative, but kind of bizarre.
ReplyDeleteI think this was an O.K. poem. It did help me some about what is what for grammar. It also helped me figure out where certain things go in a sentence. I am definitly going to use this to help me study.
ReplyDeleteMiranda Symons!
the poem was alright. It was not my style. Not enough rhyming. Yet again long live cat in the hat.
ReplyDeletei think it has something to do with the writers first time in english as a freshman
ReplyDeleteI think this poem was hard to understand. It had words that i didnt know and said them in a weird way.I didnt even know have of what it said.
ReplyDeleteOneill Graham
I did not like the poem because i did not fully understand the ending. The thing i did not undrstad was that the poem sonded like a war but ended kind of funny. I did like that the prepositions used the prepositions. It also helped ne learn some of the preposition words.
ReplyDelete-Liam
I didn't really like the poem. It didn't make much sense to me and it didn't really motivate me to read the rest. There were some points that i could understand, but overall it didn't really grab my attention.
ReplyDeleteChelsey Alzate
I really thought that the poem was weird. I don't really enjoy reading weird poems. Although I did like the way the author used the parts of speech in this poem. It was kind of cool how he made the parts of speech sound like real people.
ReplyDelete-Andrew Simpson
Honestly i dont like poems about english maybe its just me. I understood it but it was kind of boring. It was a creative way of explaning it though.
ReplyDeleteI really thought the poem was really strange.I didnt enjoy the poem as much as i would with other poems. But the author was very clrver with his word choice.
ReplyDeleteWell to tell you the truth, i didn't like the poem at all. (No offense to the writer.) It was very confusing and hard to understand. I think if he would have worded it better in some parts it would have been a good poem. But, overall i think he did a okay job coming up with a wierd grammar poem.
ReplyDeleteI didn't really like the poem, it was hard to understand. It did have some good points in it. It was also a very creative poem. I think that a good poem should flow and you should be able to understand it the first time.
ReplyDelete*Kaitly Henderson!
I didnt get the poem. It was confusing. It was hard to understand. I really disliked it.
ReplyDeleteJUCA
The poem was hard to understand and strange. I didn't get what it meant. If it had been worded better it would probably make more sense. All that aside, I still thought it was pretty boring, and I like poems that rhyme better.
ReplyDeleteI didn't like it very much. I thought it was kind of confusing. A poem is supposed to easy to fun to understand. I didn't get interested in it, i thought it could have been better.
ReplyDeleteI really didn't like it because the words didn't rhyme and it was kind of confusing. I like poems that rhyme and make sense. I thought it would be better if it rhymed.
ReplyDeleteI like the way the poem used adjectives as soldiers that beat up on the nouns. Too bad they couldn't follow the prepositions lol.
ReplyDeleteDavarius Hampton
I kinda liked it, it took a few times to get it. the poem was a little confusing. the poem didn't make me want to read on.
ReplyDeleteMichael Holland
to be honest, i did not get what was poem trying to say, it sounded more like a statement than a poem, but i did notice in the first sentence it was the street version.
