Something New

Wow!  We are back from a great, yet soggy, trip to Camp Greenville.  I had a wonderful time getting to know my students better and I hope that all of you had fun getting to know each other outside of the classroom.  This week, we do not have a poem, but we do have a quotation from Henry David Thoreau.  I would like you to comment and tell me what you think Mr. Thoreau meant when he said this.  You may also tell me what this means to you in your life; or how you relate to this idea.  Please remember that your comments need to be thoughtful and should be at least four sentences.

“There is no value in life except what you choose to place upon it and no happiness in any place except what you bring to it yourself.”  Henry David Thoreau

Happy Reading!

  2. i guess what it's saying is that life can be worth living when you put whats important to you and any good things you think and see you can make anything value.

  3. this quote means that if you think life is worhless your life will be worthless.Life is what you make it and if you want happiness go out and get it.Dont expect everything to come to you.

  4. I enjoyed this quote because it makes perfect sense. I think that Mr. Thoreau meant that whatever you do in life is a value since you do something different and unique from everyone else and there is only happiness in things you like doing. This quote is important in my life because making the best out of my education is something of great value to me. I also like knowing how things work so knowledge is happiness to me.

  5. I think it means that you choose how valuable something is. Like a penny is worth nothing to one person, but it could be worth the world to you. I think it also means that you decide if something is depressing or not.I liked it and consider this quotation very important for people to think about in their daily lives.

  6. i liked this poem! i liked it because i could relate to it. i understood what the poet was trying to say. what i understood it to be was that everybody has something they value. and what you value might not be what your friend values. the reason you two value different things is b/c you made those things valuable yourself and you think those sertain things make you happy. you spent most of your time and money on whatever you value. and you measure your happyness depending on how great you do in what you value. for example if you value fashion. then thats were you would spend your money and time. if you look nice(their for "happy") it wont bug you that your house looks like a pigstine.

  8. I really liked this quote. Henry David Thoreau seems like a very deep man. I think his quote means that you can make yourself happy by putting yourself into a better situation. I think he also means that to make our life better and find out what we want to do with our life by getting out and experiencing different things. You need to just b happy because life is short!

  9. This is an amazing quote!I believe he is saying that no one will find happiness in life unless you give it room to grow. Search it out with a desire to find it, and you will. Happiness is what you make it, and you must have an outlook that you will find at least a bit of it in everything.

  10. When Mr. David said this quote i thik he meant that you life has no value unless you make something of yourself.Meaning if you dont follow your dream you could never be happy. This quote is very inspirational to me. It makes me want to strive even harder to make my dream come true. This dude is deep lol.

  11. I think Henry David Thoreau meant when he said this was that you have a choice to enjoy life or not to. Also, life is what you make it to be so think positively. When talking about value, I think he meant that life has no value unless you cherish something whether it is family or not. I think this is a great quote and that if you take it to heart, it will have a great impact. I really enjoyed it, and it reminded me of what is important. :)

  13. I like this quote because to me thats exatly how I would put it. I think it is saying that what you choose to put in your life is what you get. Life isnt made out for you its up to you to live it and make it so make it good. I say this quote alot in my mind.

  14. This quote was very good, I really liked the wording and his tone. What I mean by that is I liked the mood he had because it was serious but at the same time happy. It took me just a couple of times to understand it, but after I read it twice I really liked it. This quote really reminds me of my life, because I always like to set goals for myself so I can end up having a good feeling of happiness inside for the things I accomplished. :)

  15. I think the quote is basically saying that life's what you make it. For me the saying is very meaningful and I agree with him 100%. If you want to be happy, bring the happiness. If you want to have fun, bring the fun.

  16. I sort of liked what Thoreau had to say. But I had to read it a couple of times. I agree with it because it sort of relates to me. It's sort of like he is saying that if you go somewhere in a bad mood, you won't have any fun unless you decide to be happy.

  17. I really liked the quote. The writer says that what you do in life is up to you. Why not choose to make it happy?

  18. I like the quote because it makes sense. I believe that it means that want you do in life is up to you. I also thinks that it says make good choices so you will end up happy. Nice quote if you really think about it.

  19. I think the quote is very true. It's saying that life is what you make of it. Like, if you look at things on the negative side, then your life won't be all that great. But if you look at things positively, you will be happier. Also, if you want happines, you should actually go out and get it.

  20. To me this qoute means that life is meaningless unless you make it mean something. To me it means you should not look in the future but in the now. Also that in order to be happy you must look at everything in a positive way. Live life long and happily.

  22. I think this quote is meaning that life is meant to be lived to its fullest. The more of you life that is filled with happiness the better a life you will lead. On the other hand, if your life is full of sadness and grief, your life will be unfulfilled and lonely, no matter how many friends or family you have. to earn real happiness you must seek it yourself without help from others.

  23. I think that this quote has a much deeper meaning than the few words in the quote. I think that what Mr.Thoreau was trying to say was that unless you seek happiness in your life, then you will not find it. If you do not make TIME for happiness, you will not receive it. If you do not think your life is worthy of any value, you will always think that way. You control the way you think, others only influence it. You have to believe you are valuable and choose youself to make time for happiness. :)

  24. I really like this quote. I think that
it means if you chose not to do
    anything with your life, then
it has no value, and that you bring
    happiness to yourself by doing
something that you love. Some people
believe that everyone was put on the
earth for a purpose, which would
be "...the value in life..." Things like
this don't just get handed to you, you
    have to find them.

  25. I think this quote describes life reallly well. It's saying that you make your life good or bad. Like, how you look at life is how it will be. So like, if you think positively, you'll probably have a better life than if you thought negatively all the time. If you want happiness, you should go find it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. This quote is very simple but it makes you think. To me this quote is simply saying that things in life dont just come to you, you have to go out and seek those things by yourself such as happines.

  27. woah!!! that was pretty deep and so so true!!! i really like that quote its pretty good. i guess its saying that the happiness you find in a place (such as disney world) isnt pre-pack with the place, its all on how u look at the place. so we could technically find happiness in school for example. (pahahahah!)

  28. I think that this is a very good poem that can be used entirely throught out your life. I think that it means that you take different things in life the way you want to. You can shrug off the bad or dwell on the bad. You can feed on the good or not notice the good. These all are choices based upon this poem that we will at least once in our life have to make.

  29. I think that he meant life is what you make it. If you want life to be great them it is your job to make it this way. I also think that this idea should be something we all follow as we go through life. If you want to have a good day then you will.

  30. I really love this quote.
It made me think about it a lot.
Such big and meaningful words, for such a simple meaning.
To me this means you have to put value in your life to make it valuable and you have to put happiness in your life to be happy. It's so true and i feel like i can really relate this quote to myself.

  31. To me this poem say that life is what you make it. We choose how we think in life, we can think positive or negatively. Me, I try to think as positive as possible and bring as much happiness to me and other people that I can. We all have our ups and downs in life, but things in life are only what we take them as, not just as they appear.

  33. From what i Understood from this quote was that you make life however you want it to be, if you want to be negative about everything, your life will seem Miserable, if you have a possitive attitude, then your life will seem much esier and alot more possittive, usually people treat you by who you are and by your actions, if you choose to be negative, then you will be treated badly and not so much with respect, :) thats whay i think. and I loved this quote, it made me realize about alot of things.

  34. I think its good but it needs to be more consistant. I mean I like the fact that its on a quote. I know what he said was and is true, but it can be taken in a negitive way. To me it sounds like a Pursuit of Happyness kind of thing. I mean its rather sad at first but after thinking about it for a while it starts to brighten up a bit.

  35. I think what he means is you make life the way you want it to be. Like Im not going to be happy unless I do something good that makes me smile and makes me and others feel good. This quote also says that life will be of no value to you unless you do something worth value. If that makes sence... In my life the world wont be of value to me unless I take advantage of the things that are given to me to make my life of value to me and everyone around me.

  36. I think this means that you can make life to be how you want it. If you want somthing to be good it will be but if you dont then it wont be. It is a explenation of how things work. Its what ever you make it.

I don't really understand what this one means, but I feel the erge to decode it. I think it means that you need to live your life and make your own destiny. What this means to me is I need to stop letting others tell me how to live my life, to a point of course. This quote really did inspire me to live my life and be myself, even if that is not what it is supposed to mean

  44. This is an interesting quote. I think it means that whatever effert you put into something, it will show, and that things don't make you happy, it's the thought or feeling of seeing something that makes you happy.
I guess the first part is actually true, like if i didn't want to read something and i just skimmed and we had a test the next day, on the test it would show that i didn't really find the book important.

  45. I think this is neat, and has great meaning to it. its true we do make are own choices and hopfully we make the right ones and to enjoy live. its fun to make your own choices in life, it makes it more intersting. I think we should choose to be happy and by doing that is to do the right thing. Sometimes risky choices are fun and can turn out great. So we should never be afaird to make new things a choices happen. Daniel taverna

  46. I think what Henry David Thoreau ment by this quote is that if you try to be happy and persue happiness then you will have a happy life, but if you have a negitive view about the world around you then your life will be depresing. While I am all about haveing a good attitude I dissagree with the meaning of this quote. Is it really possible to "stay positive" all the time in a world where horrible things are happening every day? Just turn on the news and all you'll hear about is who got murdered last night, how bad the economy is, and so fourth. So if you are concentrated on "bringing happiness to yourself" then you will simply have to ignore everything bad that happens. Then we will eventually have to leave our fake little world where everything is happy and that will bring us dispair. I think that instead of being selfish by ignoreing the bad things around us, we should accept that we live in a messed up place and concentrate on makeing others happy. Helping others will make us a lot happier then being slefish.

  47. This poem is so true, I can relate it to basketball conditioning. You can come but it depends on how much effort you put into practice to get better. With happiness, you could be the the popularist person in school getting all the attention, but it could be different on the inside. If you do things just for someone elses entertainment, that might not be the reak you and what you really do, so do things that catches your fancy.(Its more fun):)

  49. I thought the quote was cool. I guess it means that we make our own happiness in whatever we do. I guess it also means that we choose our own ways and we follow them. I could use this in my everyday life, like i could go to the candy store and chose one sort of candy and that would make me happy.

  50. i think what it means is that if you dont do anything with your life you wont be anything. if you choose not to be happy you wont be happy. you cant let someone or somthing to effect how your day or life will be. its up to you to be something.

  51. I think it means you make your own choices. And I think it means that what you surround yourself with matters most to you, and you have to bring urself happiness because no one will just give it to you. You have to work at it. You should make good choices, so you will end up happy in life. This is what I think it means.

  52. I think that the meaning of this poem is that your life will only be as good as what you put forth in your life. So if you don't put effort into your life then your life wont be as good as a person who would try hard to make there life the way they want it to be. Also that if you go somewhere and your excited about it then that trip will be fun for you if you go on a trip and you don't feel like going then that trip wont be as much fun for you as a person who embarrasses it!!

  56. Sorry for sending this in late but I think that the quote is true. If you do not place value in your life than it is worthless, but if you do place value in your life than it will be a happy one and better than the one that does not have a meaning i guess you could say. SO make the best of your life and do not do things in your life that could make it horrible that could make it horrible.

  57. Well i think wahat he was saying is that, we as people don't exactly value or live life the way we should. However I think he was saying that he thinks we don't value life, from his perspective. Another thing i think was being said is that if you don't value then you won't really be fullfilled with life. That's what I think

    ReplyDelete
  58. This is different...I dont really understand the meaning. I guess it means that if you want value in your life you have to be willing to make it happen. Also happiness will only come if you put it there. If you want anything in life your going to have to put some effert into it.
