The Lamb by William Blake
Little Lamb, who made thee?
Dost thou know who made thee?
Gave thee life & bid thee feed,
By the stream & o'er the mead;
Gave thee clothing of delight,
Softest clothing wooly bright;
Gave thee such a tender voice,
Making all the vales rejoice!
Little Lamb who made thee?
Dost thou know who made thee?
Little Lamb I'll tell thee,
Little Lamb I'll tell thee!
He is called by thy name,
For he calls himself a Lamb:
He is meek & he is mild,
He became a little child:
I a child & thou a lamb,
We are called by his name.
Little Lamb God bless thee.
Little Lamb God bless thee.
Happy Reading!

First of all I think this poem had a lot of hidden messagery in it. The little lamb in the first paragraph was an actual lamb but in the second paragraph it seemed like it was reffering to Jesus or God. I think that the uthor used the sweetest words and meanings to describe a real lamb. But in the second paragraph they said "we" which could me all of the human race. I like this poem even though I had to look up words on dictionary.com :)

I thought this was not a good peom. I thought it was about how god created us all. He refers to us as his sons and dauters. I just thought this poem wasnt that interesing.
ReplyDeleteGreg Trykowski
the poem sounded like something was going on in heaven. i didnt quite understand it because the using of thee confused me. the mood sounds calm. it reminds me of a bible story.
ReplyDeleteWhat do I think about this poem? Well my first thought after reading it was that i needed to read it again. After I read it again I kind of thought that it seem like it was using metaphors with the lamb and the child. That's what I thought
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this poem because it showed the beauty of Creation and the the wonder of it. In the beginning I thought it was talking about a little lamb and then it switched to another kind of Lamb, Jesus. This poem was comparing the two and saying that the Lamb is meek and mild and became a child. Also, it was saying all the things that He has done for us. I liked the meaning of this poem and the message it sends.
ReplyDeleteI though the poem was about creating life when i read the first pharagraph. but i just remembered this had to do with the bible. and where it says "I a child & thou a lamb,
ReplyDeleteWe are called by his name." i think it means we are created equal. great poem though.

I didnt really like the poem because it was confusing. It used a lot of metaphors but I couldnt tell what the meataphor was untill I read the ending. One thing that I did like about the poem though was the rhyming in it. It was really catchy. Other than the rhyming though I didn't like the poem.
ReplyDeleteZack Black
This poem is quite confussing because of the old english in there, but after reading it a second time I got it. In the first paragraph it asks the question who made thee? In the second paragraph it answeres the question by saying that the thing that created you is in you. If you think about what is in everyone god comes to mind.
ReplyDeleteI love this poem. With my religion the lamb represents jesus, but in this case I think that the little lamb is the reader and the author is asking if they knew who made them. Did they know who blessed them with clothes, shoes, shelter, food, and all their belongings. He's informing us that God is to be thanked not us ourselves.
ReplyDeletei think that the lamb refers to us. the poem is asking us who created us.the creator is God. thats what i think it means.
ReplyDeleteUnlike most the poems you have posted before, this one wasent actully about grammer. I really liked it because it reminded me of the "mary had a little lamb" poem, and thats my favorite. Also this poem kept me interested unlike some of the other poems. All in all great poem!

I think this was a good poem. It had a very good meaning to it. It told us about how Jesus played a big part in our creation. He was referred to as a lamb in this story. I think it is a very strong metaphor and message.
ReplyDeleteWell, i enjoyed this poem so much!! Im guessing that the lamb who came as a child was Jesus of course. But then i know that "the lamb" also refers to us becaue we are Gods children, kind like the sheep that belong with a shepherd. And its comparing Jesus to a lamb because He is the ultimate sacrifice. (in case you haven't heard, back in olden times, lambs were used as a sacrifice to atone for ones sins.) This poem was sweet and so innocent. :) Pay attention to the deeper truth that the author included.
ReplyDeleteThis poem is pretty confusing. I think I would see this in a children's book or something. But I like how he referred to God as a lamb. Overall I sort of liked this poem.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this poem. I think that it had a happy and calm tone. I think it was talking about to who created us. The poem was trying to tell us how much god has done for us. I really like that it rhymed also it makes it easier to understand.
ReplyDeleteI really, really like this one. It seems as though it's asking if you know who the Creator is and if we know that He created us. He has supplied all our needs and always will. Without Him we wouldn't be here and we wouldn't be able to supply ourselves.

I think that this poem does have a great meaning. First the meaning is not just one but it has many, I do think that this poem is really great because of the rhyming words and the use of Adjectives. Also that the Lamb meaning Jesus who was created by God was a perfect person. We are also called by his name meaning that we are called to be like him but as all of us know that none of us our perfect we are called to be the best we can to stay as he says because he is the one that has power to bring life and has the power to take it away.

I am glad to read that many of you enjoyed this poem. Emmey, I am very glad that you used a dictionary to learn some of the words in this poem. Zack, I am sorry that you did not like the figurative language.
ReplyDeleteI think one of the things I love about this poem is the picture I have in my head when I read it. I can see a very pastoral scene with a shepard lounging beneath a tree in a lush meadow talking to his little lambs who are grazing. The whole poem is soothing and calming to me because of the words that Mr. Blake uses in his verses. Even the questions that he asks have a calming effect due to the repetition.
Keep up the great work on these comments, I really enjoy reading your thoughts on these poems!
I really liked the poem! One reason is that it actually rhymed. I loved the use of symbolism. I think the use of old english fit well with the mood.
ReplyDeleteSavannah
This poem was really awesome and it's clear to me that it is talking about Jesus, our lord and savior. I love the way the author uses rhyme and rhythm to spice up the poem. The poem's use of repetition (Little Lamb, i'll tell thee! Little lamb, i'll tell thee!) makes the poem more fun to read in my opinion. I love the way the author describes Jesus, as he is referred to as the holy "lamb" in the bible. This is my favorite poem now too, Ms. Mathis. :)
ReplyDelete-James Cannon
I really enjoyed this poem. I thought this poem was really intresting. I really liked the tone of the story. To me the author wanted the mood to be very calm but intresting at the same time, which he acomplished very well. I would totally enjoy reading this poem over.
ReplyDeleteVictoria Hayes
I really like this poem. It reminds me of a very calm and quiet rain storm. I think that its about a little lamb being asked how it came to be at first. Then it move on toward the human race and how we came to be . Then it moved on to talk about God and his calm soothing beautiful nature, hence the lamb. A beautiful, peaceful, and majestic creature. Plus the fact that it was not a grammar poem is cool.

I really enjoyed reading this poem! I loved how the author described the lamb as innocent. It is really amazing that the poem has a deeper meaning. Just as we cannot survive without oxygen, nothing can survive without God! He gives us life and breath and has the power to take it away. I love how it talked about Jesus being a Lamb. After all, He is the most Holy Lamb, the Lamb of God. But at the same time He is our Shepard and we are the lambs. He protects us from harm and the ways of the world. I really like this poem also because it rhymes. I know that not all poems have to rhyme, but it is more enjoyable to read.!!
ReplyDeleteThe poem looked like it was from the bible. However i did not really like this peom because i could not really understand it. I wasnt quite sure if it was talking about a child or a lamb. If i understood the meaning of the poem i would like it more.
ReplyDeleteJacob Jones
The first thing I noticed in this poem was that it rhymed a lot. Then I read it again and tried to understand the meaning of it. I thought of it as being in the bible. I also liked the rhythm to this poem. It was smooth and calm.
ReplyDelete(Alex Agudelo is the best)
I enjoyed this poem a lot for the moral of this poem that tells a story. It starts out questing a little lamb “Little Lamb, who made thee?” and how did the little lamb get all the blessings it has. The little lamb then realizes that it doesn’t know where it came from, so the person talking to the lamb and explains. The lamb is told that basically we were given life from God in biblical stand point. When it says “He is called by thy name,
ReplyDeleteFor he calls himself a Lamb, He is meek & he is mild, He became a little child”. This to me talks about how in the bible God sent his son Jesus as a baby for us, and I think that why the little lamb is questioned about where it came from and why it has everything it douse.
When reading this poem, I first noticed that the poem was talking about God and how he made us all. It took me two times to understand what the poem was trying to say in old English. In the first paragraph, it sounded like he was talking to a lamb, but in the second paragraph, I could tell that he was talking to us instead of a lamb. This poem was different from those that most people would read today, but I still enjoyed reading it.
ReplyDeleteAndrew Simpson
I would think that the lamb would have to do with us. That we are the little lamb and that God gave us life. Also that he calls us by are names. That He is are creater and bigger than us. I liked this peom probly more than all the other ones, not to say that they were bad or anything. But i think this one as great meaning to it. Daniel Taverna
ReplyDeleteI cant really say if i liked the poem or not. I hardly understood the "deep meaning". From the beginning I knew it was talking about God, but I dont understand what connection God had with the lamb. I hope Ms.Mathis explains in class. Im really interested to understand what is really about.
ReplyDelete~sara damas~
I liked resding the poem, it has a meaning in it, that isn't just a straight forward answer to it's question, until the end. It kind of mskes you think, in my opioin, about how we all started. About the Savior, and His love for his people. His is meek and mild, meaning he's caring and gentle with his people, and how he came to earth as a child. I love the way it compares the lamb and Jesus, kind of as a metaphore.
ReplyDelete-Ashlie Renae Gibson <3
I actually like this one more than the other ones, not that the other ones were bad, just that this one talks about God. I dont really see the comparison between God and the Lambs, but after i read it a few times, i was aware. It also talked about how he created us. I loved the way it rhymed, it was sweet and short.
ReplyDeleteEmely Ruiz
I really liked this poem. I enjoyed how the writer used the lamb to refer to everyone and everything in creation. The symbolism kind of confused me at first, but it is first hour, and I got it after I read it again. The poem was very enjoyable, and I look forward to more poetry in the future.
ReplyDeleteI liked this poem i liked how the author used hidden metaphors to express his feelings about god's creations and i really think the poem has sweet words and is enjoyable to read i liked it alot by the way i used my google acount for geography to post this
ReplyDeletesarah fooshang
I tought that the poem had a great rythem and was good. I also thought that the poem was soothing and calm. I think that the story is about someone that has not found themself yet and is still small and harmless.
ReplyDeleteBY: James Michael Condon II
I love how they say thee. How old is this poem? I mean they even use "God Bless" too. Overall i liked this poem because of the description of the lamb.
ReplyDeleteI think you can look at this poem in many different ways. I think of it like God bringing Jesus in the world. But there could be many different ways to look at this. It compares between God and a Lamb, and I think that is interesting. I did like it, I just wish I understood it alittle more.
ReplyDelete-Julia Grace Ashworth
This poem speaks of how we are created in the image of our God. God like us does have the mild and meek attitude this poem speaks of but we need to remember that God also has the side of the shepherd protecting and strong. God gave us this beatiful world sinfree until we sinned God then had to take the role of the shepherd and must guide us away from danger. This has to be extremely frustrating for god to take on the role of the shepherd he has to discpline us wich sometimes meens he has to let us go and learn from pain. God just wants to bless us . Great poem :)
ReplyDeletei think that that this poem was very interesting. it was about a lamb which are so soft and cuddly. i did think that some people could take that to offense. but overall the poem is god although to me it didnt really say anything.
ReplyDeleteThe lamb represents God as he took on the role of the shepard as he guides us away from evil and deception. As we drift off on the path to danger he had to guide us back to the safety of the herd. As we join in his herd, we follow him as his lamb. God is our Shepard.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Dominque on how the thees conused me. Everything elese made sense. It's basically saying how God created all of us in our own way and I also agree with Valentina on how the author had a good use of hidden metaphors.
ReplyDeleteKara Williams
This blog has to be the most confusing one yet. I had to reread it a couple of times because it used the same words over and over. I really liked how you decided to put a poem about god this time, it was really something different. I also really liked how the lamb represents god. It was a very good peom. :)
ReplyDeleteI loved that poem. It was God taking control of everything. That is now my favorite poem. It was very easy to understand. Hope you have more poems like this one.
ReplyDeleteWhen I read this poem the first thing that came to mind when it said "Little Lamb who made thee?"I thought of God. It was pretty cool how it said at the end that THE Lamb made the Lamb. That of course means that God made the lamb as I thought toward the beginning. I don't exactly like how it makes such a sort of pretty picture of Jesus because while Jesus is perfect and holy we can sometime forget just what a big deal his sacrifice really was. He calls himself THE Lamb because after man rebelled against God they had to sacrifice lambs to make up for their many sins. Now a sacrifice was a pretty ugly thing and I won't get into to much detail but there was a lot of blood and gore and would drive Animal Planet insane. However these sacrifices were not enough to get forgivness so Jesus came down and sacrificed himself so while we were sinners we could still be saved. While it is not usually author's and painter's intention to downplay the cross when they draw or discribe beatuful images of Jesus and the cross it can lead us to think that Jesus was just a "good guy" instead of a man who died the absolute most discusting most disgraceful form of death ever just so we could live eternally. Oh, and thanks for a poem that rhymed. Maby next time you should post something that I won't write an essay about :)
ReplyDeleteI thought this was a really good poem. I agree with Molly that it sounded like it was God taking control of everything. We know that He already has been in control forever. It was a good, quick read.
ReplyDeleteEmily
i really don't know except wow it doesn't make much sense in my book. it wasn't my favorite poem but it was nice. I think it was a priest preaching to people and referring to people as lambs and children (like children of god or the lambs from the goats as in the bible).
ReplyDeleteThis poem was very interesting and had many metaphors in it. I believe that the lamb is a child growing up and maturing. The mother cares about her lamb very much, even though they were not a rich or wealthy family. This story also says Little Lamb almost every line.
ReplyDelete-Connor Knapp
I really liked this poem. It seems like a lullaby. I also like the way its rhymes. Its was a very sweet peom.
ReplyDeleteI found the poem really thought creating. It really made me think. The poem seems to be about a lamb in need of Gods blessing. I thought it was a good poem.
ReplyDeleteI didn't quite enjoy this poem at first, but I read it again and I think I know what it means. I think the lamb is us. By us I mean people. It says, do we know who created us? God did. God created us and everything else.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Dominique. It does sound like a bible story. I thought it was quite confusing. It used old English, and i dont like poems that i really have to thibk about. But it did have good imagery.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this poem. To me, I thought that the first part of the poem was about a real lamb, but it seemed as if the second part was about either Jesus or God. All of the rhyming in it made it very interesting. After reading this, I would like to read more of this author's work.
ReplyDelete-Mica Clark
I would have to agree with Katie Ownbey on this! I have a book about a lamb and it's very precious. It reminds me that I myself am a lamb, and God is my Shepherd. He keeps me on the right path, and even when I stray, He still loves me and brings me back to the place I'm supposed to be. This poem is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThis I would have to say is the best poem I've read. I like how it was centered around the Lamb of God. How he is there to set us a straight path. I hope i dont insult anybody beacuse of what I beleive in, but this was a ver very good poem. I look forward to next one.
ReplyDeleteThis poem was really cute and made me smile. I kept picturing a lamb with lots and lots of fur, wool, or fleece whatever it's called, and all i could see was his eyes. But anyways i thought this poem was referring to God's children. This poem was really good and I understood most of it. Hope we have more like this.
ReplyDelete◄Chelsey A.
I really like this poem. It has a great meaning. It was way better then all the other poems that I have read. I believe that I am the lamb and God is my shepherd. I know that God is always watching after me and he provides all my needs. Just like a shepherd does for his little lambs.
ReplyDelete~courtney allen~
I really liked this poem. I thought it was very thoughful and creative. I like how the lamb could be replaced with us.It was a very good poem overall.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this poem. I liked how it was like a mother taking care of her children. I thought this was very creative.
ReplyDeleteMirandaaaaa
after I read this poem it didn't make much since
ReplyDeleteto me. At first I think what threw me off was the change in the paragraphs. Though I did like it, but I'm still trying to figure out what the last paragraph.
Michael Holland
I think that this poem referred to Jesus being our sheperd. We are the lambs, and he guides us. This was a good poem. It had a lot of meaning
ReplyDeleteThis poem is very interesting and obviously has a hidden meaning. Most of the poeple here believe it is about Jesus of God. I dont know exactly what it means and I think it means a lot of different things. I do think the last stanza relates this to God though.
ReplyDeleteWell i thought the poem was really good. And im a christian so i understood it. The poem tells a lot. It explains how the lamb came to be and the meaning of it.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first read this poem it confused me and I did not understand what it was talking about, but when I went and reread it I figured out what it was about. It is about the innocents of the lamb and how amazingly made it is, like it talks about the lambs' wool. I really liked this because of how it indirectly talks about the incrediblity of life. I also thought it was neat how it was not about grammar, just about that you need to cherish life, because of the intricity of it.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if I liked it or not. The rhyming was really nice, on one hand. On the other, it was honestly rather confusing and I'm not really sure what it was about. I guess it's about a shepherd or something?
ReplyDeleteThis was my favorite poem yet. The main thing was that it related to God and Jesus almost in harmony to what the BIBLE says. Secondly it rhymed very much like a song and was very easy to understand and read since it flowed so well. Overall I would like to see more poems like this. ;)
ReplyDeleteI thought this poem was pretty good. I realized they were talking about god. It was really interesting how they rhymed too. I liked the poem.
ReplyDeletethis peom was well a peom and i really don't read peoms. but from the litte i do i think this peom is boaring. the words were hard to put together and understand as a whole.
ReplyDeleteI thought this poem was very difficult the first time reading through.I got a little more understanding the the second time. I realized that this poem is about God or any other religious god people worship in. i found it interesting because it rhymed. It was hard reading but i enjoyed this poem.
ReplyDeleteJatavius LLoyd-Jones
I commented on this poem before but i noticed my comment didnt stay so im going to comment again. This was a really good poem but it was really hard to understand the first time because of the old literature i had to look some words up . but in general it ws good
ReplyDeleteI like the fact that it symbolized God as a lamb. I mean I'm big in my religion. What it means to me is that Go is like a lamb, he is kind, gentle and loving to sinners. This is how all of us should act. Chris Meindl
ReplyDeleteI thought it was a very clever poem because it began with two questions "Little lamb who made thee?" and "Do thou know who made thee?" I think these are two classic questions that people have been pondering since the beginning of time. I also enjoyed the way the poet used a less used way of speaking. I saw that on some of the other comments some people were confused. I was not confused at all when reading this poem. The writer was describing the lamb.
ReplyDelete
