I was so awed and amazed by all of your wonderful comments about last week's poem, that I decided to share another poem by William Blake this week. I shared with you the The Lamb is one of my favorite poems, but in full disclosure, I should admit that I am a William Blake junkie! I really enjoy many of his short poems as well as some of his longer works. I don't always understand his work the first few times I read them and I think that is one of the things I enjoy! I can always spend time pondering the meaning of his words and everytime I re-visit his poetry, I feel like I gain a better insight and maybe one more kernal of understanding. So, this week, I encourage you to read the poem a few times and then to picture this scene as many of you did with The Lamb. Because these two poems are written by the same poet, you may be able to draw some parallels or similarities between the two!
As always, please make sure your comments are at least four sentences and be sure to give your good thoughts and explain WHY! Remember not to use "text" abbreviations and pay attention to your grammar! These comments are due by Friday Oct. 9.
The Tyger by William Blake
Tyger! Tyger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?
And what shoulder, & what art,
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand? & what dread feet?
What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?
When the stars threw down their spears
And water'd heaven with their tears,
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee?
Tyger! Tyger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?
Happy Reading!

I thought that this was a really awesome poem. I've heard it before, and had to memorize it at one point, but it never stops being cool to read. I like it whenever poets use words that look like they should rhyme, but then when you say them, they don't, i.e. eye, symmetry. I'll also have you know that reading this made me go and look up more William Blake poetry, and has made him my new favorite poet ever!
ReplyDeleteI actually really enjoyed reading this poem. In the last section of the poem, I thought he meant, who dared to make such a creature as the tiger. A powerful, scary, and dangerous animal like that could only be created by God. I also thought it mean that the tiger is a natural beauty of wild life but can make you fearful of him within two seconds.
ReplyDeleteKara Williams
That was an amazing poem! I absolutely adored the depth of its meaning. It was so profound! It shows the reality of the beauty of nature, along with the power but yet gentle way of its creator.
ReplyDeleteI think this is really cool poem. It shows the power and creativity of God. Question: Why does he spell tiger weird? Anyway, tigers are so powerful, how could anyone or anything create something like that? Only God can do it. This poem also seems to touch on the tigers personality. Blake asks where the tiger gets flaming eyes and a burning brain. I think he's recognizing the craftiness, wisdom maybe, of the tiger.

I really enjoyed this poem more than the lamb peom. I think that this poem is about about how each of us are made perfectly like the author explains the tiger. It also explanes the tigers thoughts. I realy liked this poem.

ReplyDeleteoh my god I love this poem. It is one of those poems where you read it once and you are like what the heck , and you read it again and your like oh. I really like the imagery that poped in my mind when i read this. my favorite line is "when the stars throw down their spears" i can definatly imagine that. The stars make me think of beauty and the spears make me think of power. I really enjoyed this poem!
I thought this poem had really good imagery. I didn't understand it though. They spelled tiger wrong. But i thought the way it written was awesome.
ReplyDeleteJust like the lamb poem, I also thought this poem was profound, it made me think, and I enjoyed it. I thought this poem was asking who could make such a creature that is strong and fearless. The Creator must be one that is omniscient and omnipotent. Also, the author was asking who could make such an animal, but yet make something so gentle as a lamb. I think it means that the Creator is fierce and strong to make such a creature as the tiger, yet caring to make the beautiful, peaceful lamb. I am sure the more I read and reflect on this poem, the more insights I will find.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this poem because it rhymed, not that all poems have to rhyme. It was amazing how it showed the power of a tiger. Only God can create things that are powerful like that. I also agree with Emily: Why does he spell tiger differently than people would normally spell it?
ReplyDeleteI thought that this poem was one of the best poems that is posted because I liked how you had to read it more than one time to get the meaning of some of the things the poem is saying. While reading this poem, I could figure out that this poem has a lot of rhymes. I thought that this poem was talking about the powers of a tiger in nature. Along with powers, the author also wrote about the great things of nature. I don't really know why the author wrote tyger instead of tiger, but I think it may be because of how he is talking about nature.
ReplyDeleteAndrew Simpson
I though this poem was a little bit better than the lamb poem because this time, the poem has rhyme in it which made me enjoy it, i don't really how he spell tyger with a y , but I can still know what he meant by the tyger word.
ReplyDeleteI really liked this poem. I think it was saying GOD is the only one who could create a Tiger. I also liked the rhyming, it's the rhyming in poems that keeps my attention. I also am wondering what the other people asked, why is tiger spelled with a "y" and not an "i" like it's supposed to be spelled?
ReplyDeleteZACK BLACK
This was quite an interesting poem. I wasn't really sure if it actually was supposed to make sense. At least whoever wrote it did a really good job with the rhyming theme. Overall I liked it but it would have been a littler better if there had been some actual meaning to it that.
ReplyDeleteWell i read the poem once and i thought about what i thought it meant and i came up with nothing. So i went back and read it again, this time i was more successful with a conclusion. I think the guy who wrote this was saying that the tiger was the greatest beast and that nobody dare cross him. I also thought that he might have been a little loopy too.
ReplyDeleteI read the poem twice and I still couldnt understand it. However I understood the part about how the stars threw down their spears... I like that part A LOT! I thought it was deep. I wish I understood the rest of the poem because Im pretty sure its like my favorite part. In the beginning I thought it talked about a dragonfly.
ReplyDelete~sara damas~
Shamar, I think that all poets are slighty loopy. Some for the better, but others should be put in the asylum (sp?).
ReplyDelete~~Emily
I think it was about an insane tyrant who hates all and loves to see people suffer. he is hated by his people and the people he enslaves. he is seen as a political and religious enemy.so basically it is another reference to religion or some big incident probably in the BC era.
ReplyDeleteI thought that the poem was great. I love poems that rhyme because they make more since to me. This one made so much since that I can pictur the tiger in my head. This poem will make you visualize the way to see a tiger. This was a great poem.
ReplyDeleteThis poem was fantastic. I love poems that rhyme because they make more since to me. I could almost pictur the tiger in my mind. I personally loved this poem.
ReplyDeleteThis poem was really good! Now this is my favorite poem (haha) and I love the way the author uses rhyme in it. I also love how the author describes a tiger as both a majestic creature and also a creature to be feared by all. This poem shows the world in a whole new view to me.
ReplyDelete-James Cannon
This poem was great. I could see the tiger in my mind. The poemed rhymed too and that was creative. This poem was great because i understand poems that rhyme better.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this poem a lot! To me it would not have made as much sense without hearing “The Lamb” first. It mentions the lamb in this poem, and in the previous poem of the lamb we are told how soft and graceful it is. With my personal beliefs the “Tyger” was trying to figure out how God created him. The “Tyger” is thinking how he could be so fears and strong and yet still be created by God, who also created something so soft and graceful; such as the lamb that we had already read about. The past two poems by this author have been awesome, and I really enjoy them.
ReplyDeleteI loved this poem. I'm personally happy that it rhymed, although not all poems must. It's funny how poets take simple sentences and turn them into something more complex. Instead of just asking "Were you made by the same person who made the Lamb?", it asks "Did he who made the Lamb make thee?" This poem was a little harder to understand, making me read it twice. I think it's asking how any tangible, mortal person could ever make something so perfect and beautiful that's also fierce and frightning. The only One who could ever even attempt is God.

ReplyDeleteWow what a crazy poem. I really enjoyed reading this one. It was defiantly the best so far. Even tho i said "the lamb" was the best last week, this tops it by alot.
The heavens tearing line refers to rain.I like hoew he refers back to the poem the Lamb. I think that it is saying that God created the tiger as He also created the lamb. The line about the tyger burning bright doesn't actually mean that he's burning but that it's fur is bright orangey red, like a fire.
ReplyDeleteI have read this peom four times on 2 diffrent days and i still am having touble understanding it completely. I know that the poem is talking about amazing powerful creatures created by God. I think that it is trying to say that the loin is strong no matter where or what situation he is in. No matter how he is tested he will always be strong and powerful.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this poem. It tells about how you should fear it, but at the same time praise it for its bueaty. I really hope that you put more poems up like this. I really don't like poetry but these last two would have to be the best I've ever read.
ReplyDeleteI'm not going to lie, I did not understand this poem completely. I'm not sure why he spelled tiger wrong... I didn't like where some of the poem rhymed but other parts didn't. I think that if you start ryhming a poem, you should keep rhyming it so it doesn't sound weird. I know that it mentions God in the poem. But I'm not sure what Blake was trying to say about Him. I didn't really like this poem.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this poem. I like how he describes the tiger with other objects. I also like how he talked about the tigers eyes. I also wonder why he spells it tyger.
ReplyDeleteEmely Ruiz:
ReplyDeleteI do not understand this poem becuase I never understod the phrases Thy, or thee. I do not understand old english. I did like some of the parts. I dont understand why some of it rhymed and the rest didnt, I've read this before, and still it does not make that much sense to me. I did not enjoy this poem as well as the others.

In my opinion, this poem wasn't so great. Even after reading it more than 3 times, I still didn't like it. I found it very serious which is something I really don't like and I also found it boring. Another thing I didn't like was how the poet wrote it, he didn't use normal english writing. The only part I really did like was that it rhymed.
ReplyDeleteThis is a beast poem. It ryhmes and it talks to me. This poem talks in the old english but i understood it well. As all these other comments say they dont get it but mostly i could explain it to you. If i were a critic i would give this poet a 5 of 5 for good descriptive literature.
ReplyDeleteThe "tyger" is a symbol of the power of nature. The immortal hand of the tyger compares to the power that nature has over us. The immortal eyes of the tygers compares to the eye of nature keeping an eye out for us. God and God only has the power to create beings.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion I did not like this poem. I read it several times and still did not understand what is was saying. The poem was so serious and boring. The only part I did like was that it rhymed.
ReplyDelete--Kaitlyn Henderson
This poem is very al-some and creative. This poem captures eye the first time through. It paints a picture that I can see. I love how it uses rhyming words that ties with the story. It DESERVES a 10 out of 10 on my scale.
ReplyDeleteJatavius Lloyd-Jones
I love the description of the tiger. They talk about their eyes are like a burning fire, how descriptive. I don't understa nd at the end why he brought a lamb into the poem. This poem was very good, i love the rhyming it ties the story togethor
ReplyDeleteI think this poem is really a good one. The thing about this poem is that this poem is hard to grasp with all of the word usage. It rhymes which is really good, just kinda hard to get exactly... I think that this poem is serious and that to get exactly the meaning of it would be a cool thing to do during class and try to figure out it and get all of our inputs of the poem and find out things about the poem that we didnt get fully.
ReplyDelete-Addison Helms
This poem is the opposite from the lamb. The tyger is strong and fierce, the lamb is sweet and meek. Even though it was hard to understand I enjoyed reading it. The poet writes about the lamb at the end, questioning if the tyger and the lamb were made by the same person because they are different.
ReplyDeleteMichael Holland
I guess this poem is talking about how strong and powerful a tiger(tyger?) really is. Also how beautiful they are. It also talks about when it hunts a chain nor an anvil could hold it back from catching it's prey. I liked this poem a little, although some parts of it confuse me.
ReplyDelete~Katie Cumbia
First off, I like how the poem rhymed. The poem was pretty good, but I liked "The Lamb" better. I think it was easier to understand. I don't really like old english.
ReplyDelete--Julia
I liked the poem, it was really creative and well written. I interpreted it as the tiger representing beauty but danger at the same time. There are some parts that confused me but hopefully i got a grasp of it. I also think the narrator is trying to figure out why the creature was created. Then he comes to the conclusion that his question will someday be answered or it's one of those things where you'll have to figure it out yourself.
ReplyDeleteChelsey A.
I really enjoyed this poem. It was very very well written. I espically enjoyed the mention on one of his other poems. I think the rhyming of the poem is very clever. The poem was slightly confusing though. I had to read it several times through to get the full meaning.
ReplyDeleteAndrew Hadaway
Hmmm I dont know. I find like every poem I read to be boring. But I know they aren't...I gues I just thought this one was to long. And half way threw it I tottaly was lost in what it was talking about. But thats probably just me...
ReplyDeletesince i couldnt seem to understand the poem i didnt like it. i read it a couple of times. to me it sounded like the poem was about how dangerous a tiger was. then it started to sound like someone was contructing the time.
ReplyDeleteI really couldnt apprehend what this really meant. I think this poem is talking about the humans and the wild. As like their trying to see the brains and heart within each other. Or they were preparing to destroy.
ReplyDeleteJoseh Lawton
I liked this post, and how it was talking about life and death. I also think this poem was about interactions between humans and nature. I think this post could have been a little happier and a little shorter. I would however recommend this poem to a friend, but I would also warn them it is very long.
ReplyDeleteOk, this has to be one of my favorite poems(besides the Road Less Traveled By and The Oven). It has that awesome sort of fearful mood to it. I think William Blake was trying to describe how danerous a "tyger" is and how it shoud be feared. It reminded me of this short story I read last year, only it was about a snake instead of a "tyger". I also liked how the title was "tyger" instead of boreing old "tiger". I always liked certain titles misspelled like "xistens" and "mnstr". It sort of adds a uniquness to the story.
ReplyDeleteI think this was a pretty good poem. I think it talks about how God created this amazing creature that can be easily admired for its beauty but at the same time very easily feared. The other thing I liked about this poem was that it kept a very nice rhyme scheme that helped me to read it and I just like poems that do rhyme. I think this is a good poem.
ReplyDeleteI really liked this poem although i did not complete understand it. I have come up with two was to interpret it though. The tyger is ether god or is a star. i think the tyger is a stat because he's 'burning bright'. Also when they talk about the anvil i thought it could be refering to zuses lightening bults that looks like a falling star.
ReplyDeleteI didn't enjoy this poem as much as I enjoyed "The Lamb". At first, I could understand it farely well but then it got really...wordy. I enjoy all poems because I like poetry, this one is a good one because it makes me think and wonder. I think this poem relates to Greek Mythology. The tyger, I think, represents Hades, the god of fire.
ReplyDeleteThis poem was not as meaningful as the last poem. I like it but it talks about how we are to God in the world. If this poem is true then we are liers. But I am lookingb foward to reading more Chris Meindl
ReplyDeleteI thought it had to do with a tiger going through and walking during the night. That nothing could touch him, he is the great fear of the night. Even something so fierce can be calm and genital like the lamb who was made by the almighty creator God. That nothing may hurt the tiger as he moves through the night.Daniel Taverna
ReplyDeleteI really liked this poem because it gives you alot of insights as to what it could me. The peom is kind of confusing at first so you have to read it again in order to really understand the true meaning of the poem.I think that the pome is pointing out the beauty, elegance and scaryiness in a tiger.
ReplyDeleteJacob Jones
I sencereley didn't understand this poem. I tried to read it over and over again. All I knew was that the poem rhymed a lot and that it was talking about a tiger and what it could do. I also saw that it showed the form of the tiger and how it is scary. After all I enjoyed the poem.
ReplyDeleteAlex Agudelo!!!!
This author used a lot of similes. Which I really like! I really liked when he said what dare hand to seize the fire, kinda like saying don't you dare try to cross the tiger. I think when the author began to talk about the lamb he was saying that the tiger was made by the same person, but a much different species more of a dominant predator. Loved the Poem.

ReplyDeleteIm not sure about the poem. I like it because it describes the majestic nature of the tiger. It shows how powerful yet beautiful the tiger really is. On the other hand i do not like it. it was confusing. It also didnt rhyme.
I really enjoyed this poem. I thought that the poem was the best one I have commented so far. I thought the Poem was a really cozy and intresting poem. I think the poem was mostly saying that tigers are strong and very powerful and I think he was saying that we should be more like tigiers. I would encourage everybody to read this poem.
ReplyDeleteVictoria Hayes...
I liked how the poem rhymed it kept me more interested in what I was reading. I also liked how the poem was discriptive it helped me get an image of the tyger.I liked the questions but I also didn't like them. I liked how it made me think of what the answers are. But I didn't like how it left me with the thought of what could have happened.
ReplyDeleteCasey Jeanfreau
Emerald Garrett,
ReplyDeleteThis poem no matter how many times I read it sort of confused me. I thought because of the name "Tyger" it would be about and actual tiger. I tried to associate a real tiger to this story and it didn't really fit the description to me... well exepts for the fiery eyes. I thought that this poem sounded more like it was talking about the sun or a fire. I did love this peoms discriptioin though it painted a picture in my head. I thought that this peom might be talkling about the sun becuase it was saying that is was in the sky. But it also said forest of the night to i got confused. Anyway I loved this poem but did not completely grasp it's meaning.
I really enjoyed this poem.I like how it rhymed,I think it makes a poem better when it rhymes. This poem really just flowed. It really kept me interested to see what the next line was going to say.
ReplyDelete-Hayley Ross
I didn't like it.... The reason I didn't was because it didn't make since. Some lines rhymed and some of them didn't. It was very confusing and not as good as the last poem. I do like poems a lot so keep posting poems please.
ReplyDeleteI( agree with Savannah; I deffinatly think that the comparrison between trhe 2 is that the creatyor or the meek lamb, is also so powerful that he could create a tyger. What I don't understand, though, is why he speeled Tyger in a different way, can you explain? I also have to say I liked reading this much more than I liked Reading the one about the Lamb, and that might be because it's longer, and it's a little bit more fierce, which I like. I haven't ever read any of his works before, but I must admit that I am loving what your opening up to us. :)

Mica CLark- To be honest, I found this poem to be confusing. Even after reading it a second time, I did not understand the meaning of this poem. I did love the way it was written though.

ReplyDeleteI know I already commented on this last week ,but I was wondering why the author spelled tiger wrong I would really like to know why.
great poem
I guess he is describing how the tiger is beautiful but deadly. I think he is wondering why anything would make this. I had to read this a couple of times to get the meaning. I also don's understand why he spelled tiger that way.
ReplyDeletefirst of all, i thought the poem was very interesting. it had a common rhyme scheme. i liked how he was asking alot of questions about the "tyger" was "made." i also like the way he described the "tyger."
ReplyDeleteI liked the poem over all. I had to read it twice to really get the meaning of the poem. I thought it had a very interesting meaning to it.
