We are continuing our look at Shakespeare's sonnets. I think he says some interesting things in the following poem. I can relate to his feelings, tell me what you think. Do you share any of the feelings that he expresses?

SONNET 23
As an unperfect actor on the stage
Who with his fear is put besides his part,
Or some fierce thing replete with too much rage,
Whose strength's abundance weakens his own heart.
So I, for fear of trust, forget to say
The perfect ceremony of love's rite,
And in mine own love's strength seem to decay,
O'ercharged with burden of mine own love's might.
O, let my books be then the eloquence
And dumb presagers of my speaking breast,
Who plead for love and look for recompense
More than that tongue that more hath more express'd.
O, learn to read what silent love hath writ:
To hear with eyes belongs to love's fine wit.
Happy Reading!

I feel that this sonnet is about a man who is too focused on his career so he shows less love to the women he loves. I feel this way because he says "An unperfect actor on a stage, who with his fear is put besides his part....weakens his own heart." To me, that says he's too focused on acting which makes him feel heartbroken or lonely. Then being heartbroken/lonely affects his relationship with his women. Also, I think that he has a problem with trusting which also affects how he loves.
ReplyDeleteTo me, I think the first line of this poem is that this person is admitting he is not perfect when it comes to expressing his love out loud. Also, I believe in this first part when he says “or some fierce thing replete with too much rage, whose strength’s abundance weakens his own heart” I think he means that with his own strength of fear, anger, or presence in general of not allowing love weakens his own heart. With his own distrustfulness of love, he has forgotten to follow the rules of love. When Shakespeare says,” and in mine own love’s strength seem to decay, o’ercharged with burden of mine own love’s might” I feel that his love is starting to dwindle because he can’t find a way to express the weight of his love. Finally, he asks that his books be the messengers of his inner thoughts and feelings. Then he says that words on paper can express love better, and to learn the language of love with reading instead of hearing professed love.
ReplyDeleteI believe that its about an actor who is under appreciated and perhaps even depressed. He is depressed because what ever the does it makes him sad the audience cheers at his performance but he is depressed. but really he doesn't appreciate himself he brings joy to everything and yet they are happy but he doesn't feel the same. he looks down on the world feeling sad because acting has consumed his life (and not saying thats bad) but in his case it has kept him from having a truly happy life .
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this sonnet, I think that the sonnet is talking about how this actor is growing weak in the heart because he is not loved. I think that when Shakespeare was talking about books, he was saying that books can express feelings better than people saying how they feel. I also think that the actor has feelings of fear and other depressing feelings since he is not loved. The last thing I want to say is that I could tell how he was feeling when Shakespeare talked about a burden of feelings.
ReplyDeleteAndrew Simpson
This sonnet tells me that shakespeare has some difficulties in his life. It sounds to me like he has some love issues in his life but he dosent really make it too clear to me at least on what he is talking about. This poem to me was a little damp it didn't have that much detail to what the problem was in what he was talking about. Shakespeare, I think was talking about some struggles he might have in his marraige but in all it has to do with love.
ReplyDeleteSam McGill
Well I actually like this one a little bit just for the simple fact that I think he's calling himself a bad-ish actor. I also belive that Shakespeare is coming out about cheating on his wife and overworking. When I read for the last time I kinda got the vibe that he was hoping his plays were good. Shakespeare is an interesting character.
ReplyDelete@Leigha
ReplyDeleteI like your perspective of the sonnet. I agree on how you put the first line into your on words. It could also be that he has problems expressing his love of loud. And at the end of the sonnet, you said that writing words about love on paper can be easier to express through words. I didn't think of it that way but it does make sense. It makes it a little easier to understand where he is coming from.
I think Shakespeare is saying that he can express himself better when writing rather than speaking. The first line tells how an actor may know his part perfectly but when he gets on stage the words flee from his mind because he becomes afraid. It kind of makes me wonder if this is secretly what he is trying to express to his wife sense they had some issues. He is saying that darling I love you but I express my love for you better in my poems than me speaking because sometimes, just as words can't express feelings, feelings can't express words.
ReplyDeleteI think that Shakespeare is saying that a person is having fear of speaking to people on the stage like in a play or something. How ones love comes to something or someone. How he thinks about the love and it may make him feel weak for some time. That he needs to take a second and wait and think about what this love might be telling him and what he can learn from it. Daniel Taverna
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree with Andrew Simpson because I do think it as to do with not feeling the love. How is not feeling the love he needs to preform at his best. Because he also as feelings greatly. That Shakespeare does feel heavy at times to where he just cant do it with love towards him. With love the fear would be set free from him. Daniel Taverna
ReplyDeleteI thought this was a beautiful sonnet. This is the definition of poetry in my opinion. I think that this is about a man telling the one he loves that he isn't perfect, but the love that he has for her is. I think the part that says "So I, for fear of trust, forget to say
ReplyDeleteThe perfect ceremony of love's rite..." means that he wants to marry her, but he can't trust her to say yes because of his imperfection.
~Hannah McKeel
This poem reminds me of a man who isn't focusing on his wife as much as he needs be. An "imperfect actor" are his flaws and he tries to repent, but he winds up weaken his own heart. It sounds like the world is catching up with him, and he is drowning in things that aren't truly important. It reminds me of the song "American Dream" by Casting Crowns. It sounds like his soul is dying, and he needs love to take away his fear and problems.
ReplyDeleteEmily of 5th
I agree with Sam. I think that Shakespeare definately released some of his problems, fears, and angers in his plays and poems. Maybe this poem is reflecting his own marriage problems. After all, he did leave his wife the 2nd best bed. Perhaps this poem is talking about his problems with his wife, while combining his problems with the stage.

@Leigha
ReplyDeleteI acually have a different perspective on the poem after reading Leigha's comment. What she said made a lot of sense to me. However, I don't think that the poem was so much about following the rules of love as it was about the fact that his distrustfullness was caused by his imperfection. Anyway, Leighaa's comment was pretty enlightening for the most part.
~Hannah Mckeel :)
People are not perfect. Some people don't want to beleive that they made a mistake or did something wronge because they would like to think they are perfect. But their not, no one is. The first part of the poem made me think of this. Like the person is realizing that they make mistakes and it doesn't make them any less than anyone else. But then I got confused because it the person writting the poem starts to say, "So I, for fear of trust, forget to say" Kind of confused me. After that was said I couldn't figure out what the poem was saying. This might be completely wrong, but maybe its saying that they love the person that is putting themself down, so now its a burden on them because they are in love?
ReplyDelete@ SHAMAR
ReplyDeleteI don't understand how this poem is talking about someone cheating on their wife. There were some other posts as well, that talked abouot a husband wanting to tell or say something to their wife through their poem. I personal, didn't get that from this peom. I also think that Shakespeare knew his plays were good. So I dont think he was writting a poem with a secret message to people asking them if his plays were good or not. Maybe his is, it's just for me, I didn't feel any of that from this poem.
I agree with Andrew, books can express wonderful things with the saying "the best book is the book that takes you where you want to go." Brian Baxter american bookseller (quote found on sheet of paper taped on Mrs.Morgano's bookshelf.) not being a die hard book reader myself though. A life of entertaining others can bring great joy to oneself, but it can be a lonely one. Also those who do sometimes find that the life they live isn't what is was at first. That material possessions, fame, and fortune are nice but don't bring true happiness and what really matters is love.
ReplyDelete@Ashley
ReplyDeleteWow, Ashley, I really liked how you described your interpretation of the sonnet. I agree with you that Shakespeare is saying that feelings can be expressed better through the written word instead of speaking something. On the other hand, I didn’t really think that he was writing this sonnet about his wife, but maybe he was deriving the inspiration from her. I liked this sonnet because I can definitely relate to Shakespeare’s opinion that words and feelings can be better expressed when writing instead of speaking. Shakespeare must have been a deep kind of person to have thought and express his feelings so well.
I think this sonnet is talking in a perspective of romance and all that stuff. It's talking about how it is better to wait for love to find you, rather then you going to find it. Its better to express your feeling toward that person instead of trying to impress them. You don't know if they could be your husband/wife. You have one chance to get it right. Chris Meindl
ReplyDeleteI agree with Leigha. I think that Shakespeare was saying that books express love better than words. Sometimes in life some people even think this way. Also, I agree with Leigha on the idea that the actor is depressed with all of his despairing feelings since he is not loved. One last thing I will mention that I agree with Leigha is that I also think that the actor's love is starting to fade because he can't find a way to express love.
ReplyDeleteAndrew Simpson
I agree with Ashleyzp.I like how she made the sonnets meaning more clearer.I agree that sometimes words cant express feelings, and that feelings cant express words. After reading your comment i really understood the sonnet more clearly. Thanks Ashley!
ReplyDeleteI thought that this sonnet was ok. I think that this sonnet is talking about a man who has let his career control his life for too long. I think Shekespeare is saying that your feelings can be expressed better in a book than in words. It kind of give me the impression that Shekespeare was a little depressed when he wrote this sonnet.
ReplyDeleteThis poem is a very unique poem and I think it means not to be nervious. I like that it ryhmes and I think its more fluent because of the ryhme. I think the author might be talking to a female famly member or freind. I think the author mihgt of been talking about marage.
ReplyDeleteGreg Trykowski
I agree with Andrew Simpson. Shakespeare does have a way of expressing love in books and in poems. I also agree with Leigha, because the actor is kind of depressing in a way. It does seem that the actor's feelings are fading away. Its kind of sad realy, the actor just needs to live life to the fullest and be happy in everything he or she does. Chris Meindl
ReplyDeleteThis sonnet was a lot better to understand, but it wasn't very detailed. This sonnet is talking about a man who has a pation for acting and he acts very happly and brings joy to people, but his passion for acting and passion for love is dimming each and each day. The only reason that he is unable to make people happy and to love other poeple it's because his unloved, and by unloved I mean marraage love. His/her life is pointless from what im reading, its like the person will never find love, that books are more detailed than people, which means that the books to him/her expresses more feelings than a person.
ReplyDeleteEm. Ruiz :)
I agree a lot with Holland M.
ReplyDeleteI do agree that the actor was very sad with his/her's life. after i read Holland's comment I understood the Sonnet better when he said that people were cheering for him, but his performance of a perfect person its nowhere near what he feels in the inside, lonely, sad, and depressed. I also agree with Liagh when she said that his love was starting to fade away, that books expressed more feelings than a person towards that person's perspective.
I also agree with her when she said that the person its not very good at expressing his love, and I think thats one of the reasons that his not resinving love, because his way of expressing it isn't probably very pleasing to other people.
Em. Ruiz :)
I think in this sonnet that he is talking about a man that let's go of the person he loves when he shouldn't have. It says "As an unperfect actor on the stage, who with his fear is put besides his part"; I think he is saying that even though he messed up that he has to put it behind him and move on. The sonnet goes on to say "So I, for fear of trust, forget to say The perfect ceremony of love's rite,"; which to me is basically telling that he messed up leaving the person he loved because he didn't trust her. This is what I think the sonnet means and made since in my head after reading.
ReplyDeleteI think that Shakespeare was saying that he tries to act as if he's good at expressing his love to someone. But, really he has trouble. The person he loves has more strength than he when it comes to displaying affection or speaking words of endearment. He has more strength in writing to her how much he loves her. It's more eloquent for him to write, and he is telling her to train her eyes to read his love to her on a page.
ReplyDelete@Emily
ReplyDeleteI didn't ever think about when I read it that he may be talking about his self at the time. when you put it in the point of view that he is talking about him self at the time it seems to be more sensible. I went and listened to the song "American Dream" then reread the sonnet and they fit together perfectly. I strongly agree with what you said about the sonnet, and I think you are dead on about a man ignoring the real important things in life, like his family.
To me it sounds like the poems talking about shakespere. It sounds like his career is interfering with his love life. I dont get the end of the poem. I read it a couple of times and still dont get some of the words
ReplyDeleteOn Jasmines comment i agree with what shes saying. I do think it has something to do with his wife or something. When it says "Whose strength's abundance weakens his own heart," i think thats saying his passion for acting or whatever hes doing is getting in the way of something. Also when it says "And in mine own love's strength seem to decay," i think its saying he or the women stop loving one another.
ReplyDeleteI understood the sonnet all the way up to " And in mine own love's strength seem to decay". It went downhill from there. In the part that I understood, it made me think of Nelson Mandela's quote. The one about how we shouldnt be afraid of ourselves. In the first part Shakespeare was saying how an actor is scared when their on stage, but then their handed a part to play. Their character might not be a shy character, so the actor gets to free themselves in the play.
ReplyDelete-sara damas-
I agree with Greg Trykowski. This is a unique poem. I never thought that Shakespeare would write about something that would be still relatable to in the 21st century. I never noticed it rhymes! However now I looked closer and noticed that every other word rhymes. I dissagree with Greg when he says, he thinks the poem is pointed towards a female. I imagened the person being a male. Im not sure why though. I just felt it in my heart.
ReplyDelete-sara damas-
Hannah Mckeel,
ReplyDeleteThat actually made a lot of sense to me. I agree that maybe it's hard for him to show his love for the girl, and that's why he's imperfect. He's better at writing it than showing it. He's afraid that because he can't outwardly express his love in actions or words that she may not accept him. And his strength in writing (not words) weakens his heart because she'd rather have words.
I think this poem is saying that even the most famous and powerful people are not perfect. They too experience pain and suffering. They may seem all smiles, but they are just as human as we are. Everyone wants to be loved, no matter who they are.
ReplyDelete@ Hannah McKeel
ReplyDeleteI did not think of it that way until I read your comment. I do agree with you for the most part, but I think instead of loving his words, they are experiencing a deeper problem. Maybe she does love his words, but she just doesn't realize what he is doing for her as well. His actions display his love for her more than his words, and she doesn't realize he is doing all of the things he does for her. Perhaps she thinks he doesn't love her because he acts more on his love more than he speaks it.
I beleive this sonnet is about an
ReplyDeleteunappreciated actor. Since he is unappreciated he is feeling un-loved. I believe that he is saying he is feeling as of he doesn't even want to act anymore. The acting is intefering with his life.
Kara Williams
Kara I agree with you a little bit. I do think its about a person felling unloved but I think the acotor part was a exaple. I think the person is feeling bad thought. Your comment helped me understand theis poem a little better but I still dont think its about a actor.
ReplyDeleteGreg Trykowski
To me, The sonnet was talking about a man who chose his job as an actor over his love for the person he loves the most which later drastically affects him to the point that he can barely express his love. Where it's says "And in mine own love's strength seem to decay" means that what the man went through came out with bad results. The sonnet also said that express your love by writing it on book instead of saying it out loud, which I felted that it was the only solution for the actor. so after I read the sonnet, I learned that even people with the most power can have emotional pain that will bring them down. I was shocked a bit inside when I though the same thing happened to shakespeare.
ReplyDeleteO my goodness, this was so sweet! In plain English it seemed to say, I'm an actor who keeps forgetting my lines because I have stage fright, which means I'm a lover who forgets how to love because of your beauty. He was bassically saying, please forgive me for not knowing how to love you perfectly, but take this poem, read between the lines and know that I adore you. I love the way he says the last few lines, "O, learn to read what silent love hath writ:To hear with eyes belongs to love's fine wit." Like, if you really love me, you'll know what I'm trying to say to you.
ReplyDeleteAshlie Renae Gibson
The first thing that popped into my head after reading this sonnet was a song called "Million Dollar Man" by Kutless. The song is about a man who gained every material object someone could ever want but lost what is truely imprtant in life. The corus of the song is "He's a million dollar man. He's got everything he wanted, but now what he wants is what he had." This kind of relates to my favorite line of the sonnet,"Whose strength's abundance weakens his own heart." I guess this is why the "character building" teacher says that we should have goals in life but not forget to care for other people. I think this is what the poem is all about.
ReplyDeleteROBERT THERRELL
Wow, I trully couldn't grasp the true meaning of this sonnet. I think Shakespeare is trying to say that love sometimes isn't the easiest thing to see. Only when seen truthfully will love come out to its full potential. Or shakespeare could be talking about a person abusing love. I can't wait to read my fellow classmates comments to see what they say about the sonnet.
ReplyDeleteJoseph Lawton
@ Emily of 5th
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with your comment. I do think that Shakespeare is describing someone who is,"is drowning in things that aren't truly important" as you put it. I also like that Casting Crowns song and think it goes along with the sonnet well. Maybe you've heard the song "Loose my Soul" by TobyMac. It is about the singer's struggles with balancing work and family. Tobymac is a very famous singer but he also has five kids that he cares about and wants to be a father too. Since he has to be on tour a lot he really struggles with not letting his fame get in the way of his family, kind of like the guy in this sonnet. Toby, however, makes his family his fist priority unlike the guy in the sonnet which is why I have great respect for him. I almost choose him for my Hero progect and I regret that I didn't.
Just like the last shakespeare this poem can have more than one reason. It sounds to me that he is saying that some people may be able to send off a better message by writing it. He also seems that he is saying that he would'nt feel as comfortable speaking to express his feelings than if he was to write them. In this poem he is telling us the things that are more comfortable for him and after reading it twice I realized that he was talking about his own self. I thought this poem was very interesting and it brings alot of thoughts to my mind.
ReplyDelete-Henry Hill 1-
Wow, thats a crazy thing, how Ashlie Gibson sees it as an actor. I never looked at it that way to see an actor forgetting his lines. Its almost as this sonnet is refering to Romeo and Juliet. Wow, its so cool how so many people can get different answers on the same thing. No wonder they teach us that we are all different.
ReplyDeleteJoseph Lawton
@ Ashlie Gibson- There are parts that I agree and disagree with Ashlie on. I disagree that the first sentence meant that he was stage frightened, I really don't think he is afraid to speak I just believe he is saying that he'd rather write than speak. I agree with the last lines, when she said he's basically saying that if you love me, then you'll understand, because after reading the whole ending it sounds that he's talking to someone that he is in love with. This poem is definitely a love poem because of the quotes and the statements that he set in his poem.
ReplyDeleteHenry Hill 2
This is the worst of all the poems we have read. I do not think it is about an actor but probably is about love. I think he is trying to say that love might not be obvious when we see it and we have to hear with eyes. We have to see love.
ReplyDeleteThis is my comment to Savannah, I do not think this poem has anything to do with powerful people.I do agree that everyone wants love. Even the rich and powerful want real love not acting. I do not know you may be right.
Michael Holland
I really did not understand this poem. I read it a few times but could not figure out the real meaning. As I started reading the poem, I thought I was going to understand it because I could kinda picture what was going on. As I got to then end of the poem I was just confused and could not see that image anymore.
ReplyDelete--kaitlyn henderson
I think the person is saying he is living on a large stage in the production called life. He is saying that he is not perfect. Just like a play ,life will make you laugh, cry, love, and hate. I like this poem because it is very relatable.
ReplyDeleteTerah Gamble
I agree with Joseph Lawton. If I am correct , I think that he means that he thinks tha Shakespeare means that love is just a big mess. It is an emotional rollercoaster. One minute your fine and dandy, the next minute you hate echother because of a few words.
ReplyDeleteTerah Gamble
I am commenting on Ashlie Gibson's comment.
ReplyDeleteI really like her point of view of the poem. After reading her comment, I can also see it in that way. I really like the way that she sees it in plain english. The last part of her comment, where she is quoting part of the poem, I agree with the way she thinks it is meant by Shakespeare.
--kaitlyn henderson
I'm comment on leigh's comment
ReplyDeleteI agree with her thoughts and views on the sonnet. I think that fear, anger, and a lack of love were the only causes for the actor to be sad with his job and relationship. I also like that she used some big words that adds up to the description of the sonnet. I think she made a great point on what she said.
david s
I think that Shakespeare talking about how this actor isn't loved. He's also saying that he just isn't right. The man is too emphasized on his job. That means less love from his spouse.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Sam McGill. I also think that Shakespeare has some difficulties in his life. He expresses this through his sonnets and plays. This difficulties in his life are mainly about love. He might have been talking about his troubled marriage.
ReplyDeleteI think this poem was about a man who is an actor. He loves acting and he loves it too much. It sounded to me like he had a wife and loved her but loved acting more and had to decide between the two. He doesn't know what to do anymore and wants to have both but can't. I liked this poem the most out of them all.
ReplyDeleteJustin Noote
I agree with Emily Ruiz. I think she is right when she said that his passion for acting is getting in his way of other loves. It sounds like she had an idea like mine about him having another love and had to choose between that and acting. She also made a good point when she said this poem isn't as descriptive as the others by Shakespear. Usually he goes into detail and gives a lot of info but in this he doesn't seem to. Good comment Emily.
ReplyDeleteJustin Noote
I think he is saying that he is too busy with other things and he has no time for love. The same way the actor can't do well because he is filled with fear. He is saying that many things stand in our way. It is up to you to find a way around them.
ReplyDeleteI think this sonnet is about a man who loves his career very much. I think that no matter how he feels put down that he will continue to choose the path he is already on. This poem was well versed and well thought out. I hope we read more like this.
ReplyDeleteChelsey A.
I want to agree with Justin Noote. The more I read this sonnet, the more I start to believe that maybe this guy was an actor. At first I thought he was a writter, but in the beginner he uses the word actor to either describe himself or someone else. Perhaps there was also a wife, but I don't really see where that could fit in the sonnet.
ReplyDeleteChelsey A.
The end of the poem spoke most to me. The last lines are very important in my life. It says we should look on the inside of someone and not just look at their appearance. I would like to say I live by this rule because it is very hard to look on the inside before you see their outside beauty.

I can relate to what I think he is saying: love doesn't always last. Like a crush, when you are obsessed with someone for a while, when you start to care less and less about them and eventually stop caring about them all together. This makes sense to me because sometime people just weren't meant to be together despite what they think. I think Shakespeare wrote this, because of trouble with his wife, Anne, like we learned in early January.
ReplyDelete~Brandon Rader
This is a response to Salvador Juca.
ReplyDeleteSalvador, when I read your comment, I thought about it and your comment is actually better and makes more sense than mine. I think you are right about it meaning the actor is too obsessed with his job, and his spouse is loosing interest in him because of it. I see know that Shakespeare meant that the actor was simply a workaholic, not that sometimes love just doesn't last. But, I do think that both are posts in some ways do relate to each other, Like how mine is about how love sometimes dies, and yours about how sometimes people just loose interest in each other because of things like work and ageing.
~Brandon Rader
After reading the sonnet, and other people's comments, I have two different views on this poem. In one way he is saying that he doesn't pay much attention to his life outside of acting. In another perspective it could mean that he feels unloved. That only on stage is he loved. I really enjoyed this sonnet and understanding the meaning of it.
ReplyDeleteMica Clark
@ Ashlie Gibson
I can't believe I did not think of that! Never did I think of it in a way that he's comparing him forgetting lines to forgetting how to love. It is very true now that I have reread it and kept that in mind.
I think he is saying that he can't explain his love. He is saying that like when someone on the stage gets nervous he doesn't know what to say. It's almost like he is so much in love that he is mesmerized. He is unable to say how he feels. He let's his eyes do the listening because he can't think straight. -Randy Bridges-
ReplyDelete@ Brandon
ReplyDeleteI've never looked at it that way before. The way he wrote it makes it sound like there is some anger in his words. There may also be some fear like he is scared to lose the one he is talking about. I think this is one of Shakespeare's best because I can feel his feelings. It's pretty weird how a poem can make you do that. -Randy Bridges
I thought that the sonnet was about him liking a girl and him asking her out. This line espesilly described what I think the play is about “Who plead for love an look for recompense”. here he is saying that he wants her love and for her to apologies. The sonnet seemed like he wrote his girlfriend a poem because he got on her nerves and started a fight.
ReplyDelete~~Anthony Gelardi~~
I thought that this Sonnet was very true. My favorite part of the Sonnet was when Shakespeare said 'Or some fierce thing replete with too much rage, Whose strength's abundance weakens his own heart;'. I think that part was strong, I believe that when your positive and strong about everything you heart won't be weak. I really didn't like the rest of the poem because nothing really related to any situations that I have.
ReplyDeleteI'm commenting on Brandon Rader. I agree with everything he says. When I read this poem I could picture it being about someone that I liked. I also think what Brandon says is right because most people aren't going to leave with someone forever. One thing I don't agree with is when Brandon said he wrote this for his wife. I think that he just wrote this just to write it.
ReplyDeleteIn this poem, I think that he is typing about himself, not so much to another person. To me, it's like he is saying how he is being influenced in learning and teaching or something. I think it's funny how he is kind of saying he gets love and stuff from the books he reads. Overall, I think he is talking about his love for learning.
ReplyDeleteI am commenting for Justin. I kind of agree with you. I agree when you say it is about an actor or someone who acts. But I don't see where you get where you think he says he has to choose between acting and his wife. To me, he is talking about himself. And I also don't see where he says he doesn't know what to do anymore. To me, it's like he is saying he loves what he does and he doesn't want to change what he does for anything.
ReplyDeleteThis poem was so confusing at first! I had to read it like, twenty times before I could figure out what it was talking about. I think it is talking about a very depressed man and how his life is in turmoil. I think he loves his job too much and is losing his wife and that he is going to end up hurt. Also, the poem implies that love doesn't always last forever, as much as we all want it to.
ReplyDelete-James Cannon
(Responding to Brandon Rader)
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, we did learn that Shakespeare might have had trouble with his wife (hence him leaving his second bed to her when he died)! Yeah, I agree with you that the poem could be talking about a crush and how it doesn't always last and everything. It makes sence to me too that crushes are brief and that this poem really hits on the subject of love. You're exactly right and I agree with you 100%.
-James Cannon
I think this sonnet is about a person that is lonely. I think this person is sad and has no one to see how he really feels. The person is scared and only makes it worse for himself. I think that the person wants people to see what is wrong with him but they don't see it.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first read the begining of the poem I thought it was talking about life in general, and I thought they were talking about the things people overcome in life evey day and the fears that people have. As I started to read more of the Sonet I started to get confused but easily caught on. I enjoyed this sonnet because of the simple fact that I understood what it was saying. I hope more sonnets like this come in the future.

I think that this poem is about someone who is too robotic in his way of expressing his love. It is as if he is trying to hard to show someone that he loves another and cannot relax. I actually think that shacksphere is wrighting about himself and his wife. This might be to show that he loves her but he has run out of ways to express it. Liam McNamara
ReplyDeleteSorry it was late. I was caught up with the project and I was ecited about going to colombia this weekend.
After reading a few other comments, I have changed my thinking. In Jasmins comment she thinks it is about a man who is to focused on a carrer that his wife. This makes a lot of sence, especitially because this happens quite abit in relationships. I also agree with Leigha when says it is someone who cannot express his feellings correctly.

I agree with what Jasmine said about the sonnet being about a guy who's way too focused on his work to worry about other important stuff. Also about him not paying enough attention to his women when he should I thought when I read her comment I was almost reading my own comment again but hers sounded better. I probably would've said the same thing about him being heartbroken and lonely too, so I agree with her comment one hundred percent. I never actually believed there would come a day when I understood one his sonnets.
ReplyDeleteThis sonnet means to me that this person/ actor is not able to be a good husband because he loved acting more than he loved her. Since he loved acting so much and acting could not love him, he was a little weird. As I read this poem, I had an image in my head, about everything that was going on and I could picture him on stage performing. I also think that he loved acting so much that he was obsessed with his job as an actor.
ReplyDeleteI am commenting on Ashlie Gibsons.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about the love that he has for acting and how he can't really express it, but if you love him than you will get what he is trying to say. I am so glad that you mentioned those last few lines because I didn't get what it was saying. But when you explained it I finally got what he was trying to tell the readers. I also agree with you on the way when he is trying to apologize, because when I was visualizing it, that is what was going on in my mind about him trying to say sorry for not loving her perfectly.
I believe that the man has less and less time for love. He is always thinking of his career and doesn't pay attention to life. It sounds like his job is taking over his life and he doesn't care. Also I think he tried to express himself in a letter, but it looks like he is losing his love minute by minute. His wife should understand that its not so easy for him to say what he feels. He explains that for some people it's easy but for him its hard because he feel dumb. I think.
ReplyDeleteI agree with tatiana. He did write this to someone he liked or loved. I do disagree on the wife thing. Its sounds like he has someone, but he focuses more on other things than his wife..So maybe she doesn't want to live with him forever. Over all you have a great opinion.
ReplyDeleteI think this means that rich people only find joy in money. They don't find ethical joy or helping people. It also says that people who don't care about others and will never find love. They will end up unhappy and alone and all their money will ever give them is possessions.
ReplyDeleteI think this poem is about a man comparing how he expresses his love to a bad acto. hes talking about how he cant express his love like he wants to. He think he feels like love is less now because he cant express it. So now he wants his looks to express his love.
ReplyDeleteIm commenting on Leighas post,
ReplyDeleteI agree with her and her idea about hm admiting his weakness to express his love. I aslo think that with his in ability to express his love it makes him sad. She makes a great point when she says his love is dwindiling because he cant express love. However when she says he wants words to express love i thought he mean he wanted his looks to express his love.
