This is our last week together before Thanksgiving and I am thankful for all of you, my students. You have worked hard this fall and have done great things! Keep up the great work!
I Never Saw a Moor by Emily Dickinson
I never saw a moor,
I never saw the sea;
Yet know I how the heather looks,
And what a wave must be.
I never spoke with God,
Nor visited in heaven;
Yet certain am I of the spot
As if the chart were given.

Well I definately didn't understand that first part the first couple of times I read it. I kinda still don't but it was interesting the way this dude or dudette wrote it in metaphors. I did really like the second part of it because of the person's sureness of heaven i guess the way the person said they didn't visit it or spoke with God but they know that the place is real. Overall it was good...a little confusing at first, but good
ReplyDeleteThis poem was good. I didn't like that I had to look up some words but I understand the poem better. Emily Dickenson is a very recognized person. It was short which was one of the reasons I liked it.
ReplyDeleteThis was an intresting poem. I liked it alot but I do have a question what in the world is a moor. Also what is up with the wrighter she has never been to the beach. This was a good poem with confusing words like moor, and heather.
ReplyDeleteGreg Trykowski
I kind of liked this poem. It was pretty short and boring though, but it's message was pretty good. I think that since she was inside all of that time, even though she never really got to see the outside world, she read enough to know about it. She had some sort of feeling of knowledge. It was a little confusing

This was a very complex poem. I had to look up moor and heather. I think when the author said I never spoke with God, Nor visited in heaven I think that ment that Emily Dickinson never visited a church. I think the reason the author wrote this poem was because Emily Dickinson missed out a lot in her life and the author wants us to experience things that she didnt.

I really enjoyed this poem.It was simple but yet helped me learn two new words, moor and heather.I feel so sorry for Emily because even if you see something on tv or in a book it is not even close to what it is like in real life. I would like to learn more about Emily and I might do some research.
ReplyDeleteI thought this poem was a really good one. I really liked how it was different from other poems. It was harder to understand which made me think about it a lot. I had to read it a couple of times to understand the real meaning of it. But I do have one question, What is moor?
ReplyDeletei like how the short story had a message saying you can do something wonderful someday. but when it said she never saw the sea. it's kinda of like that the author didn't really expereinc life outside.

I didn't really get the poem... I also didn't think it was that good of a poem because it was really short and confusing. I guess it was just strange to me and jumbled up.
ReplyDeleteI have had to go over Emily Dickinson's last year. I didn't really enjoy this poem because it was to short. I liked the other poems because they were longer and gave me something more to write about. I never really enjoyed reasing poems by Emily Dickinson.
ReplyDeleteEmily Dickinson... I love her poetry. I think this peom used good imagery. As you can probably tell by now I LOVE imagery. I think it was saying that she never had done these things but she still knew they existed. Its like having a faith in somthing. We beleive there is wind and air and yet we can't see it. I loved this peom but some of the terms like "heather" confused me. I thought that was somebody's name!
ReplyDelete~Emerald~
if shes a poet i not her fan you cannot just write a poem on what you have-not done. poems are based on experience trying to describe things that need more than a bland sentence(ex a i went to the grand canyon wanyon and it was fun. not to mention her rhyming. but on a positive side i did enjoy that it takes a look a t the agoraphobic person and how the fear of public places and leaving can literally suck your life away if your not careful. and on s much more happy note this lady is probably the second biggest book worm i can think of(next to my mom who reads hours on end at night going trough about 100 books in six months if she can sneak out to the book store and get some so she uses other people as an excuse to get what was going to be one but 10 books that have no relation to her excuse) so i admire her dedication to the common quest for knowledge.
ReplyDeleteThis poem was confusing to me at first, but after reading it a couple more times, I got what this poem was trying to say. After reading this poem, I am glad that I have learned two new words, which are moor and heather. I feel sorry for Emily about how see doesn't know what these things really look like. This poem made me think of how unlucky some people are, while others are lucky.
ReplyDeleteAndrew Simpson
I thought this was confusing at first but then at the end I began to understand it. This is saying that you can do something someday that is just important. This poem was kind of unique though. I think when she said the part about god that was a great comparison. I loved the poem, it was very creative.

ReplyDeleteThis poem was kind of confusing. I get it now . I really do like this poem and I think it is about faith. She has never seen the ocean nor heaven but, she knows for a fact, with all her heart that it is there. I can relate to this poem , keep up the good work Mrs. Mathis
I enjoyed the poem once I read it more carefully and understood it better. To me this poem was talking about how seeing is not believing. In the poem is said "I never saw a moor,I never saw the sea;Yet know I how the heather looks,And what a wave must be". To me this said that even though she had never scene the sea she still knew that it was there and what a wave was like. I enjoyed this poem, and reading it made me think strongly about how seeing is not believe.
ReplyDeleteTo me, this poem is about imagining and beleiving in things that you can't see, or havent seen. It reminds me that seeing isn't beleiving, beleiving is seeing. This is a very good poem that I enjoy reading over, and over again! Although its not that long, in little words it says so much.
ReplyDeleteThis poem was a great and thoroughly thought out poem. To me this poem says that see believes in what she cant see. The sixth and seventh lines says that she has never met God. The last 2 lines say that she still believes that her name is in the book of life. I really enjoyed this poem by Emily Dickinson.
ReplyDeleteYes the poem was short. But I actually enjoyed reading this poem. It took me more than one chance to read cause the words were kind mixed up in a way that we dont speak, but over all I thought that it was a really good poem. And I did find a word or two that I would have to look up. Daniel Taverna
ReplyDeleteI thought this poem was pretty good, though I'm not sure about the last verse. I have been raised knowing that you have to accept Jesus into your heart to go to Heaven. So, you would have to talk to God to go to Heaven.
ReplyDeleteAbout the recluse part, it makes me think of the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Except the recluse in that book is way crazier than most poets. = P
Emily of 5th Period
Hey Ms. Mathis, I really like this poem. I thought that it was really cool how he talks about the sea and how he never saw it, but he still knows what it looks like and everything. I didn't really understand the meter in the second stanza, it really confused me when I was trying to read it in the right time. But overall I thought it was a really great poem.
ReplyDeleteI thought this poem was ok. I didnt understand some parts of the poem, but i still thought it was ok.The way the poem is worded isn't how we would talk today, so it was kind of hard to read.
ReplyDeleteI thought that the poem was goo. I think that it means that there are many things that you can miss if yo let other things get in the way. I think that for some people it is hard to let some things go and they go into depression. But I think that people that have lost something admire things more that someone that has everything.
ReplyDeleteJames MIchael Condon II
i didn't this poem at all. As the many time i read this it still doesnt make since. The poem is worded different than i ever heard before. A poem should be descriptive words or feelings not random. I wouldn't read this again.
ReplyDeleteJatavius Lloyd-Jones
I think that this poem is about that you don't have to see things to believe them. If you never see the grand canyon, you still know its there because yo believe its there. I liked this poem a lot just because who ever wrote it must believe in heaven and so do I.
ReplyDeleteThis poem was very confusing. When I first read this poem, I had to read it again because I had no clue what she was talking about. When I read the poem the second time, I felt that she, (Emily) was just writing down what first came to her head and what was in her heart. I hope that next weeks poem is a little bit less confusing.
ReplyDeleteBy: Victoria Hayes
I liked this poem. It was difficult to understand unless you lookes up the words. I liked that it used things that we would know like the sea. Over all I thought the poem was just okay.
ReplyDeleteMiranda Symons
Well i didnt really understand this poem. It kinda seems like it means that even if you have never done something you know how to do it. Im gonna have to study this more.
ReplyDeleteI thought this poem had deep meaning as to what you can understand about something without ever seeing it personally. I think it is a poem that explains how the author trusts the unseen. When I read this poem, I think of faith, as that is what trusting what is there but not seen is called. I think the way the author covered a huge topic in such a small poem was very precise and covers a lot more than what is said; it makes you read in between the lines. I liked it a lot.
ReplyDeleteI thought this poem wasn't so good. I didn't get this poem, but it wasnt bad. The way i use my words in a poem is way different from the way it is used in the poem. I talk about how i feel or things that i experienced, not just writing stuff down.
ReplyDeleteJatavius Lloyd-Jones
In my opinion, I thought this poem was talking about that even though Emily Dickinson never experienced seeing a moor or a wave, she could still learn and live through another source. For instance, her imagination or books could teach her about the world in which she lives. In the second stanza, when she was talking about never speaking to God and never seeing heaven, yet she still knows the spot of heaven, I thought that was a little strange. I thought this poem was all right, but it was not my favorite even though I really like Emily Dickinson's poetry.
ReplyDeleteI thought the poem was very confusing. I was unable to find a meaning. Overall i didnt care for it. I thought it was very dull or it just might have been to deep for me.
ReplyDeleteBen Sessions
I thought this poem was kinda confusing. I didn't understand what it was refering too. It was very different from the previous poems that we have had. Which was good, its good to change it up sometimes.
ReplyDelete--kaitlyn henderson
It was a little confusing so i didnt understand it very well. I didnt know what a moor or heather was. It was also a little short. I think she meant that shes never really been anywhere, but she has a idea of what the places might be like.
ReplyDeleteI really liked this poem. It had some words that I didn't know, so I looked them up. I had no idea what a moor was. But now I do. After i looked it up I started to understand the poem. But I didn't really understand it, so I asked my mom about it. Because she might have taught this poem. And she said that The poem was about faith and that you could tell this if you read the second stanza very carefully.
ReplyDelete-Andrew Hadaway-
I did not like this poem. I think it was about that our faith tells us some things are real even when we cannot see them. Like I kn ow heaven is real but I cannot see it. I am glad this was a short poem.
ReplyDeleteMichael Holland
I kind of liked this poem better than the other ones. But it was confusing. I wonder why she didn't leave her house. How would she know what to write about if she didn't see the beautiful parts of the world?
ReplyDeleteI kind of liked this poem. I think it was about the author's faith in God and while she had never seen him she knew he existed, just like she knew that seas and moors exist even though she had never seen them. She also seems to be longing to get out of her house and experence the moors, seas, and heaven. Personally this poem speaks to me about faith.
ReplyDeleteI didn't get this poem. I reread it a couple of times but still didn't understand it. I really got lost when she said yet know I how the heather looks. I really didn't understand this poem so i didn't enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteI feel very bad for Emily Dickenson. I am sad that she never left the house, and I think that maybe in this poem she expresses her regret for not seeing the things that are most beautiful in the world. I also think that maybe she means that she is okat with the fact she never saw these things because she tells us that she knows what everything looks like and there is not point in seeing theses things for herself. I might be wrong though...
ReplyDeleteHannah Beth McKeel
I really didn't like this poem because Emily was just saying the negative things about her life. You should always be positive about what you've done in life. She should say that her goals are to do those things. Maybe she just needs to leave her house and come out of her shell that she's hiding in. The poem was a little confusing and I had to read it a couple times to understand it, but the meaning I got from it was that she maybe feels that she won't do those things.
ReplyDeleteTHis poem was interesting. It was kind of short but it was interesting. I thought that it showed in it that she was a recluse and that she stayed to herself. However, it had also showed that she was able to imagine things just based on what she heard and saw. I also think that it shows that maybe she wanted to get out of her house and see the world and how beautiful it is but that she was scared to. It was a really good poem.
ReplyDeleteJustin Noote
I like this poem! It is kind of like me really wnating to go some where because I've heard about it from someone else. Obviously, I'm going to know where it is and some of the features. My favorite part was the last 4 lines because I can relate to it to an extent.
ReplyDeleteI truly didnt understand the poems meaning. Is he dead or alive. And how does this all tie in together for the poem. If i did understand it I wouldn't be able to tell what type it is. Ms. Mathis is there a connection between all of these poems or are they all random?
ReplyDeleteJoseph Lawton
I am loving all of the comments! Y'all are really thinking hard about this poem and why Emily Dickinson wrote it. I, too, think she is talking about her faith in things that she has not seen. I'm sorry that some of you aren't enjoying this poem because of the language, I think that the language adds so much to this poem and the tone.
ReplyDeleteI have just been picking poems that I enjoy to share with you for this semester. The only two that are related are the two by William Blake. Next semester I may ask you if there are poems that you would like to discuss on the blog and I will post those, so be thinking about your personal favorites!
Happy Reading!
I think that this poem is about what people know and don't know. I think the author is trying to get a point across that we should use are imagination. Even though we may not have seem certain places or people we should imagine what they are like. I sorta liked this poem because it made me think about its meaning. I used my imagination to think of what the author was trying to but into the readers heads.
ReplyDeleteThis peom in my opinion is not as good as the last 2, especially the last one. I think I would like this one more if it had been put in simpler terms that ussually make the peoms more fun to read. I think it is saying that with your imagination, you can do any thing.
ReplyDeleteThis poem was okay, so i guess you can say I liked it. No matter how much i tried, i couldn't understand it. The poem was very artistic and thought out. I applaud this lady for this poem, she is very descriptive in a mysterious way.
ReplyDeleteI thought that this poem was kind of cool.I don't like that you have to look up some of the words, and she could of made the poem a little longer. It was pretty interesting.Over all it was good.
ReplyDeleteI thought that this poem was alright. I liked the one from last week better. To me some of the words were confusing but it was very interesting. Over all I like it.
ReplyDelete~Courtney Allen~
I didn't really like this poem. It was confusing to me. I read it a few times, and didn't get much out of it, but I did learn a new word, moor. I liked the other poems better because I could understand them.
ReplyDelete-Julia
I thought this poem was Okay. I like the last one better because it related to us a lot better. I didn't understand some of the words. Thus poem was kind of short, if it had more sentences, i would of been more descriptive

I didn't really understand it, but nevertheless i still liked it. It gave a sense of calm and peace. The sentence "Yet certain am I of the spot" was a little confusing to understand. Over all i really liked it.
ReplyDeleteChelsey Alzate
I thought that this poem was pretty confusing and I didn't really understand it. I was not sure what the point of the poem was. LIke the first stanza thing I had no idea what was going on. I think that if it was longer that I personally would have understood it much better.
ReplyDeleteCasey Jeanfreau
I actually didn't like this poem because it didn't flow as I thought a poem of this subject should. The one thing I did like is the fact that it made me think of thanksgiving. It also made me think about the beach and the waves as I was reading. Overall I think the poem was definitely fit for the thanksgiving holiday. After reading the bios about the writer I understood the writing technique more. This was a poem that made you think.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this poem. I think it held strong meaning about ones heart. even though shes never seen certain things she believes. she has faith. her heart tells her its there. its a beautiful poem.
ReplyDeleteSARAH FOOSHANG (SORRY i posted this so late i tried to submit it much earlier but i was having problems with the computer)
I did not really understand this poem. It used vocabulary that I did not understand. The vocabulary made this poem very confusing. I am sure if I knew the vocabulary words better than i would understand and relate to this poem
ReplyDeleteI think what she's trying to say is that she's never actually seen this stuff, but the information we here and are surrounded by makes her vision these things. The fact of the matter is we're envisioning how things might be and really don't know what we're talking about and need to actually sese these things for ourselves. Don't really understand the poem at all.
ReplyDelete-Davarius Hampton
I think the author was trying to explain that although there are certain things she has never seen, she still believes they exist. Just because she has experienced something or discovered something, doesn't mean another person hasn't.
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me of the saying "Not seeing air doesn't keep my breathing. Not seeing God doesn't keep me from believing."
I love this poem a lot!
I thought that the poem was good in explaining that you should be thankful for the little things. the poem was vary good and made me think about what i was thankful for. from reading the poem i realy cant wait to be able to go to thanksgiving diner and be with family.
