This week, I thought we could look at a funny poem to which I'm sure none of us can relate!
Remember to explain why you feel certain ways about the poem- say something in your comment! Be sure that you include at least four sentences in your comment. And, yes, this poem rhymes- this fact does not need to be repeated by everyone in your comments!
Homework You Stink by: Jack Prelutsky
Homework! Oh, homework!
I hate you! You stink!
I wish I could wash you
away in the sink.
If only a bomb
would explode you to bits.
Homework! Oh, homework!
You're giving me fits.
I'd rather take baths
with a man-eating shark,
or wrestle a lion
alone in the dark,
eat spinach and liver,
pet ten porcupines,
than tackle the homework
my teacher assigns.
Homework! Oh, homework!
You're last on my list.
I simply can't see
why you even exist.
If you just disappeared
it would tickle me pink.
Homework! Oh, homework!
I hate you! You stink!
Happy Reading!

This poem is so true! I think this poem definately relates to every student in the world (except the major nerds). I LOVED this poem and I want to share it with everybody now. I love the rhyme scheme and the poem sounds like it is from a student's point of view.

I like this poem a lot because I can relate to it (though teachers will disagree with me)! The author of this poem gave really good rhymes that go into the extremes of comparing just because homework is not fun. I hate homework, but I don't think I would do some of the other things that the poem talked about doing. This poem does a good job of describing how much it hates homework from a student's point of view. I think that this is a very good poem.

This poem is amazing and I feel the same way! This is the best poem ever, it gives me new excuses for my teachers. Thank you so much Ms. Mathis. this is the best poem this year. I think we should have more ppoems like this one. A poem that everyone can relate to.

This poem took the words right out of my mouth!!! I agree with everything the author said. I absolutely loved this poem. I liked the way it rhymed and the way it had a smooth ending. It made me think about homework and why it is important to do it.

This poem is super duper metaphorical. I love the rhyme scheme because I typically love to rhyme in my poems. What really drew me into the peom was when the author says I wish I could wash you down the sink. You can actually picture homework as a liquid running down the sink haha.

I loved this poem and can relate to it in a way. I think homework stinks but i know it teaches you and your suppose to do it. this is the first poem i enjoyed reading. I didnt have to read it 3 times before understanding it.
ReplyDeleteI think this is one of my favorite poems so far. I really enjoyed it because there are some days I feel exactly the same way. Why do we even need homework? I like how the author expressed his dread of homework.
ReplyDeleteI really like this poem. It's so true. I dont really think any kid likes homework.I really liked how the poem rhymed. When a poem rhymes it keeps my interest more.
ReplyDeleteWow this poem shows alot about how people feel :)... No worries because I think that homework in my perspective is not that bad, I mean of course it takes time but it isnt so terrible... What is looks like is about a little boy that does not want to do his homework but play and just have fun... Sometimes we can become like this and not want to do our work but just play and have fun instead of doing what we need to finish or complete. This is a great poem to have on this day because I acctually have a few projects to do when I get home and over the weekend so when I have to do homework I will think of this poem and how it shows us alot about how we react. The line I thoughtthat was the best was the one that said..."Homework! Oh, homework! Your last on my list. I simply can't see why you even exist."- Addison Helms
ReplyDeleteI loved this poem! It was hilarious! I liked the way it repeated "Homework! Oh, homework!". I also noticed how it started and ended with "Homework! Oh, homework! I hate you! You stink!" I thought it was very funny and childish.
ReplyDeleteThis peom is so true! Jack Perlutsky is my new favorite poet! Well... maybe not. I think in the past he had some isues with homework. I don't like homework either. I like this poem.
ReplyDeletethis poem is soo true. this is one of my favorite poem because it relates to our thoughs and i love where it said that homework shouldn't exist. finally somebody who comprehend about how we feel and think about homework.
ReplyDeleteThis has always been my all time favorite poem in the whole world. The first time I read it was in 3rd grade at our schools library, and I checked it out many time for this one poem. I guess I liked it so much because it was catchy and also I felt like I could relate to it. When I had a lot of homework I use to would often state the first few lines of this poem: "Homework, oh Homework! I hate you! You stink! This poem brought back so many memory, I am glad to see it again. It seemed like it was longer though....
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this poem. I love poems that authors show there personality in, even though i don't know how old this author is you can tell that when he or she was given homework i felt like the worst thing ever. I relate this poem everyday as i sit down to complete the long list of homework i am assigned. I really enjoyed a poem that i can relate to and i hope there are more to come.
ReplyDeleteI liked the poem. It made homework seam like something you can wash away or blow up. The author took some things to the extreme. The poem was writen in a very childish point of view.

I really liked this poem! I totally agree with Prelutsky when he says homework stinks! I like how you can imagine your homework being washed down the sink or a bomb exploding it into pieces. Sometimes I wish I could just get rid of homework but it's always going to be there. But, sadly to say, I also think it's good for us to have homework because then we can go home and practice what we learned and not forget after that class.
ReplyDeleteThis is a pretty cool poem. Right now I feel like giving it to some certain teachers. I don't know if I'd rather take a bath with a man eating shark than do homework but I definately hate it. I am glad the author of this poem feels the same way. The author does a great job of describing homework from a students point of view.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that everyone can relate to this person. I don't like homework one bit, I like this poem because you can relate to it and it uses great descriptions as if you was right there the whole time. Would you rather do homework or wrestle a lion alone in the dark? I probably would, because i hate homework.:D
ReplyDeleteThis poem is so true. I thought that this poem was awesome and homework is always something that I don't want to do at home. Thats why I go to smart center because i'm still at school. I thouth that this poem had a great vibe, and I really enjoyed reading it. But I would rather do my homework than eat liver. BY: James Michael
ReplyDeleteI thought this was one of the best poems we've read. It was lighthearted and comical. I like that a lot better than most poems. I liked the analogies Jack however-you-pronounce-his last-name put in. They were really creative.
ReplyDeleteEmily G.
This was a great poem. I really like that you can relate to it, and you can imagine your homework being blown up, or washed down the drain. I've read this poem many times before, but everytime I read it, I still think it's hilarious. I think there should be more poems like this, poetry that people can relate to.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really great poem. I wish my teachers could see the poem so they could understand how it feels to have homework. I like really like the way the poet used rhyming to describe the way he felt. That was really creative.
ReplyDeleteJatavius Lloyd-Jones
I do relate a lot to this. Haha :B. This was a really good poem because the person that wrote this writes his feelings towards his homework. I hope some of my teachers read this poem and maybe it will change there feelings towards giving us so much homework. I really did like the poem.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely loved this poem! It was fun and had a lot of descriptve details that made me actually visualize this poem. This is pretty much what every kid in America thinks. I loved it.
ReplyDeleteKara
I like this poem. It really shows how kids feel about homework. Homework is not a hard thing, it just gets in the way sometimes. I like how the author tried to say that he would rather do anything else besides homework. I also like the way it rhymed.
ReplyDeleteI really like this poem.I think this is the best one so far.Homework is not hard its just a pain when you want to go home and rest and have fun.If only homework would just explode into bits. :)
ReplyDelete~Courtney Allen~
It sounds like a student wrote this poem. I don't always hate homework, I just wish there was less of it. I definitely wouldn't do some of the things that whoever wrote this would rather do then homework. But sometimes, I do wish homework would just dissappear.

ReplyDeleteThis poem is very relatable. Not only do i not like homework but, as you may know I am a Drama Queen . This poem is very dramatic and exaggerated. This is my favorite poem that we have had so far.Keep up the good work Mrs. Mathis.
This is my favorite poem by far! Everything rhymed and made sense. Everything in the poem aplplied directly to me. It laughed very much. Please keep posting out of the ordinary poems ,like this and last weeks, on there. They really make my day.
ReplyDeleteI really like this poem.I like that it rhymed and had a good rhythm to it. I also like the descriptiveness of the person's attitude towards homework. Even though it's an exaggeration, I really could imagine that person wrestling a lion. I also liked the repetition of Homework! Oh homework! and I hate you, you stink. I also liked that i could relate to this, cause there are days that homework stinks.
ReplyDeletechelsey A.
I really enjoyed this poem. It was very intresting. I could really relate to this poem because i hate home work. I hope next weeks poem is even better.
ReplyDeletevictoria hayes
I love this poem it is awesome. I wish everybody could live off this poem. It kind of sounds like a teenager wrote this poem. I also really like the rhyming that the poem has. I also like the things that the kids would rather do than do homework.
ReplyDeleteJacob Jones
This is probably the best poem I've ever read mostly because it relates to pretty much every kid in the world and probably most adults. I loved the rhyme scheme and how each line had the perfect amount of syllables to keep the story flowing. I liked how the author expressed their extremes of how much they hated their homework.
ReplyDeleteBEST poem ever! It's about time someone complained about homework.I like how they stated how much every kid hate his/her homework.I really enjoyed reading this poem.
ReplyDeleteI personally think that this poem was a little to extreme. I mean I don't like homework either but I don't really mind doing it, its not a struggle. But sense this author hates it so much I thought that the way he expressed his self was very good. He made it seem that if you don't know what homework was then you would think it was something that was terrifying. This is what I think of this poem.
ReplyDeleteCasey Jeanfreau
Ha Ha, this poem was very funny to me.rhyming poems are the best to me thats another reason that I love this poem. I feel this way when I do homework that is hard also. This poem reminds me of some days that I dont want to do homework. In some parts of the poem I actually agree. I love this poem i think you should make more poems that are like these.
ReplyDelete-Henry Hill-
I really like this poem. I bet a lot of people feel this way about homework. I would say i would have to agree with it to a point. I Also thought that this poem was funny and not boring to read. Hoping to read more funny poems.Daniel Taverna
ReplyDeleteThis is a grand poem! I enjoy how the author can relate to a student's perspective of homework! This is a very funny poem, but it was slightly childish in a way. This author is pretty cool, if I met him, I would become his BFF stat.
ReplyDeleteMay the Force be with you- Hannah Beth Mckeel
This poem gave me a lot to think about.I like the part about washing it away in the sink.I also liked the use of adjectives in the poem. Sometimes i feel like this. It can be very fustrating esspecially when you dont have enough time.
ReplyDeleteIt was kind of confusing. It about homework and every day life. I think that it is ok to make home work fun. I now want to read another
ReplyDeleteCHM
Wow! This is the most funniest poem ever! I really liked how us students can relate to it. I also liked how the auhor said the most random things like I rather eat liver? haha These are my favorite kind of poems like the ones that you can actually understand, and agree with them. So far, this poem tops all of the rest. :)
ReplyDeleteJack Prelutsky is now my favorite poet because he hates homework just like do and so he inspires me that you can write poems about anything really. Good poem 5 stars for the ryhming and also for the subject
ReplyDeleteThis poem has been my favorite since we have started comenting. It was fun and exploses and random, all the good caracteristics a poem needs. I can relate myself to the author because i to hate homework, although i probably would not eat a porkipine. If i read it right it had a fast tempo that i really enjoyed and that made it fun to read.
ReplyDeleteI feel exactly like that about homework. I love that poem... I think that is my favorite poem ever. Keep up the good work.. I also loved how the rhyming fit perfectly.
ReplyDeleteI liked this poem. I liked the hyperboles. I agree with this poem. I want more poems like this. Randy Bridges
ReplyDeleteI can definitely relate. I have too much on my plate, and I'd rather focus on that than homework. I actually have a life, and I feel like homework just slows me down. If we didn't have it, of course I would be happy. However, without it, we may not learn anything, resulting in a terrible future.
ReplyDeleteSo, unfortunately, I have to admit, homework isn't as bad as it could be; we all just got to do what we got to do.
I can understand what the author is going through. I love how he uses hyperboles to get his point across much better. I can tell he really doesn't like homework by the way he keeps using these hyperboles. This poem proves figurative language can make a poem much stronger. -Randy Bridges
ReplyDeleteOh my!! I totally love this poem! This made me smile as soon as I started it, and by the end I was laughing! I think this poem shows what kids all around the U.S.A think of homework!
ReplyDeleteI hate homework. I mean if we know the material why do they have to waste our time at home and make us do it again. I liked this poem. It showed good description
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with this poem. I liked this poem only because it trashed talked homework. It did have good rhyming and well written content. it wouldn't be good if it was about football because i like football.
ReplyDeleteI love this bog, its so true. I really liked it because it does describe how i feel about homework. Homework does stink!! This was my favorite blog, i really liked it. it described the way homework feels
ReplyDeleteEmely Ruiz!!
I liked this poem. Mostly because i hate homework also. I dont see the point in homework. This has to be my favorite poem.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this poem. I think most kids would feel the same way about homework. It was very comical. It reminded me of Dr.Seuss.
ReplyDeleteBen Sessions
Oh this brings back memories. it reminds me of when i was really little and i read green eggs and ham. that the author would rather be anywhere than do their home work being with a shark rather than do work. this is a fun little poem but i disagree homework doesn't stink it gives you things to do and to put it this way if the work is easy for you and your friends don't understand it you can feel great being the king for a day (or queen)
ReplyDeleteI liked this poem alot. I thought it was very interesting and had alot of good ideas in it. It makes me think back to when I was little I actually loved homework but now I hate it. I really enjoyed this poem over all the other poems we have read.
ReplyDeleteKatlyn McAnally
I thought the poem was funny. the ABAB pattern was classic and a great choice. I totally agree with the poem in that homework is terrible and not needed. the poem seemed like it was written by a 7 year old which gave it a nice touch.
ReplyDeleteAnthony Gelardi
This poem is my favorite of all. I can totally relate to it (jk, no really). I love that fact and that it is easy to understand. I think because the poem is written more in modern terms, that younger people will enjoy it more.
ReplyDeleteI liked this poem because I could for once understand it the first time I read it. Also I liked it because I completely agreed with it. I actually seriously am going to copy this and print it off and pin it on my wall! I also like that it is written to be enjoyed and understood by people of my age group.
ReplyDeleteI didn't really like this poem. I can relate to this poem. I hate homework. I understand what was going through the mind of this poet, but overall i did not like this poem
