Last Post of the Year!

This will be our last poem to comment on for the school year and it is aptly about Summer.  Please remember that comments need to be proofread before you send them to me.  You need to post two seperate comments and make sure that each contains at least four sentences.

The Summer Day          by Mary Oliver
Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean-
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down-
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

Happy Reading!

  1. I believe this poem is talking about how precious life is. You should use your life wisely and find value in every living thing. I also believe it is asking who created life. Life is short, so give meaning to each moment.

  2. I really like this poem. It makes me want to go outside and enjoy the warmth of the sun and bueaty of the outdoors. I think the person in this poem is amazed at how beuatiful the world is. When they talk about prayer I think that it is the authors way of saying that they are thankful for what god created.

  3. I like poem Ms. Mathis because mostly I like grasshoppers, this poem sounds like biography of a grasshoppers life. I still don't quite get the rythm of the poem because half of the time it if talking about grasshoppers and then it talks about who created the world and also talks about prayer and I see no resembelence there. But overall its good.

I thought that this poem was interesting. It reminded me of what I wanted to pursue in life, which is a successful rapper. I thought that this poem was telling everyone that you should look at life more than just a day to day thing, but look at it as a gift that should be cherished and not being taken for granted. That is how I live life.

  5. This post was a good post to put up to wrap up the end of the year. This poem reminds me of the year and all that i've been through this year. I invisioned this poem as I am the grasshopper and how much we have done in the year. A part that sticks out to me would have to be how it says it eats sugar out of a hand, to me this symbolized how me as a student have gotten so much from the teachers this year. but there still comes the time where you have to fly away to another destination.

  6. To me, the poem was easy to tell by what it's saying. It tells us that life is amazing the way it was created. I think that we should treat life like it is the most precious thing to us. I can't believe that this is the last poem for this year. I'm actually starting to like reading and commenting on them.

  7. This poem to me is the thoughts of a hippie type person or a very visionary yet human peron. The way the author is going on in detail about how the grasshopper is eating the sugar and the way her jaw is moving. Although all the questions that the author asked made me think about how I am at times very curious about life and how it works. However I still believe that the authour asked too many questions though and a lot of parts were just random.

    @ Savannah McNulty

I agree with what you said, life is to short for you to just waste everyday wishing you would of chased your dream. I also see what you meant when you said that a person should live life wisely and not take anything for granted. Life is so important, what you do here dictates where you're going to be when you die. At least, that is what I believe.

  9. I agree with Savannah on this poem. Savannah's statement on how precious life is. In my statement where i expressed how i felt, i said this was like how i guess time is short and precious. I think based on what I and Savannah said about this poem i can go ahead an conclude that life is short and you should take advantage on the time that you have now.

  10. I think this poem is to show how important the little things in life are. How you could find something a simple as a bug, as an amazing creature. I think it also means life is to short to think that hard. You should just spend your time enjoying life.

  11. This is touching. I had to read it more than once. It seems she's questioning.....whos the creator. What is the purpose of our lives. She believes in a higher faith, but it not sure what to do. She is confused about life. She enjoys watching the grasshopper , but wonders who has created it. She wonders whats there for her in the afterworld.but is happy at the moment that passes her

I believe you are right. she thinks you should value moments. And so with living things. in addition to life being short i also believe she wonders why we die. Why moments seem to pass us so quickly.

  13. I like this poem it speaks to me about simple observation, and wondering about the world. How even the smallest grasshopper, which seems simple at first glance, is complex and unique. Not just a little bug. I also think its saying how we need to cherish this world of ours and go outside explore and study. But its not just our world its nature's world too.

    ReplyDelete
  14. This poem is asking about who created nature and breathed life into the world. The author is wondering what else to do besides pay attention to the life around her and bask in its beauty. She is enjoying every moment because she knows that life does end eventually and everything dies. I liked this poem because sometimes I get so caught up when I should be soaking up the natural wonders around me. This poem reminds me to stop and smell the roses that are waiting out there to be discovered.

  15. I really liked this poem because to me it seemed like it was describing the greatness of summer. The greatness being warmth and the fun that summer brings to most people. It also semmed that in this poem that a little girl is out discovering the world. As she looks out into the world durring summer discovering the small things.

Thats so neat that you see the poem as a big observation. With someone or something wondering about the world and what the world gives. But then this observation goes from a simple observation to a unique and complex observation. The observation being like a mystery that grows to be a hard case to solve.

    Joseph Lawton

  17. @ Holland
I agree with your comment. He could be talking about how complex the smallest creatures are and how he finds interest in them. This makes him wonder who created the grasshopper. Finding a child-like fascination in God's creation is what shapes a curious mind and fuels our desire to learn.

  18. I thought this poem was weird until the end. It started out talking about summer but I thought it got random in the middle. It started talking about a grasshopper and I didnt see a relation to summer. I liked the end though because it sounded like the person was praying the whole time.

  20. This poem is very interesting but is kind of jumpy in the beginning and end. I like the part about the grass hopper. I did not know that they moved their jaws back and forth instead of side to side. At first I thought that the poem was starting off general and narrowing down to a topic but it changed at the end.

  21. I completely and utterly agree with Holland's comment. It very well righten and is very moving. I really think he captured the very essence of what the poem is about. I also agree that all nature should be taken care off, no matter how small they are.

  22. This poem is a very nice poem because, when it is talking about the summer it is comparing everything in a great way. This is about when you go out in the summer and basically just have fun seeing the grasshoppers and different things go all around you. When the poem asks us about who created our world and different things like that, it makes me think that it is saying dont feel grumpy, because it's the summer time and all you have left to do is have fun, because there is no school or anything else to do. This poem is a great way to modivate the students at our school to have fun outside in the summer.

I agree deeply with Holland, because I like the way that he said a simple grasshopper is important on our earth. To explain it makes me think that Holland is saying that the smallest things are just as important and that they are something to love in the summertime also. One more thing is that I think that we should also get out more and cherish the beautiful things on our earth, because we don't want those things to be left out. Holland's reflection was great, but when he began to get in detail he should'nt have stop talking about it because the things that he was saying were very nice and they were also things that would make you think about the title of the poem.

I agree with what he said about the poem. I like how he said that we should view eveything in life as unique and complex instead of viewing it as nothing interesting or surprising. I think that's why the author wrote this poem, so that we can know that life is full of surprises.

  28. This story reminds me of a environmentalist type of person, who is wondering why everything works out so well in nature. I think the person is admiring nature, and trying to enjoy it to the fullest. I can understand how the person feels about nature, although not to the extent that he does. I like this poem because it is one of the few poems that we have had that I was able to understand the first time I read it.

I can agree with what you said, but I thought it was more along the lines of an environmentalist talking about how he admires nature. I like the fact that it reminds me of summer too. 30. I really enjoyed the lay back feeling I got from reading this poem. I think that the author purposely did that. The author talked about relaxing in the grass and asking questions about things that weren't commonly thought about. I think putting us in this mood of relaxing and the simple questions we don't talk about showed us how fast our life is going. At the end of the poem the author talked about how everything will die and it is always too soon. This to mean meant that we need to slow down and relax like the person in the poem because we wont live forever.

    ReplyDelete
  31. @ Holland

I completely agree with what you are saying about how we need to cherish this world around us. I think that if we don't we will just take the world for granted and it wont be as beautiful anymore. It makes me wonder what other things that are so complex in nature but we never took the time to notice; like the grass hopper in the poem. I also agree that the world isn't ours, that it is natures world, we just happen to be a part of the nature and need to enjoy it.

  32. @Holland
I definitely agree with you that we should observe our surroundings more and recognize that even the smallest creature is complex and extraordinary. I also agree that we should treasure the world around us. My favorite part was when the author said that she knows how to pay attention, be idle, and blessed. This poem makes me eager for summer to get outside and relax. It reminds me to never take a single moment for granted and to live my life fully while keeping in touch with nature. Peace out! :)

  33. This poem is a pleasant wrap up to the year. To me this girl is confused with life . She knows life is wild and short and thats why she let that grasshopper go so it could enjoy its wild and precious life or maybe she let it go so she wouldnt be around to see it die. This poem is talking about what we are going to do in our lives.

Im glad this poem made you think about getting caught up everyday and not enjoying the beauty of life because i felt that way too. I agree with how you think we should all stop and smell the roses. I agree with you about that a poem like this that talks about life is a pleasant wrap up for the year because it's kind of like a happy ending. I also agree with the rest of your comment. The girl in this poem knows that life is short, but what she also know that you only get to live once, not like a cat that gets to live more than once. I though that is why she let the grasshopper live. This poem made me glad that I have a life to live.

  37. I think that the poem is talking about a person who is questioning life. This person in the poem just sits by and watches things die each and everyday. The person is asking her if there is anything that she could have done to have saved the things that have died. I also think that the girl is talking about how everything dies. She also asks herself why they were put there in the first place if they were only going to live for a short period of time.

  39. I'm not sure what this poem means but while i was reading it i imagined the author sitting in a feild writing about the grasshopper that she saw. 41. I feel like this poem is about someone that doesn't understand or know how to pray and worship the God that made everything around us. I think she is saying that she doesn't understand the reason to pray or why people do it. I also think that she doesn't think that there is any reason to pray because in the end everyone dies so it wont matter. But I think she feels bad that she doesn't know more about the God that made the grasshopper in her hand or the dirt she is standing on or the sun she is under.

  42. @Josiah Petree
I understand and agree with what you are saying. I thought of this poem as this girl doesn't understand prayer and how powerful it is and why she should even pray to God. But I also see how it is about life and wanting to do something great. I think to many people just sit around and stay in one place forever. This girl I think doesn't understand prayer and God, but I think she also wants to do more, and maybe just doesn't know how.

  43. wow this peom was pretty cool. I would have to say that it was a good peom to read. It was almost like a beautiful peom, when I was reading it. 45. I really liked this poem. I really liked how it made me feel like i was in the poem. I think this poem is about someone who is a little confused with their life. I really like how it symbolizes things. I thought this was a really good poem to end the year with!

  46. I like this poem because I can relate to it a lot. At the beginning I think that she asks "Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?" because she wanted us to think. I don't think these questions actually have anything to do with the poem itself. When she talks about hte grasshopper, I think she is refering to herself and as described the grasshopper does things differently from most other animals. Sheis saying how different she is from other people around her. I think she is saying that prayers now-a-days are full of questions and wants. Her prayer is full of thanks and recognition.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I agree with Josiah. I think the person is confused too. I really liked what you said about the person not wanting to see the grasshopper die so she let it go. After reading your comment i have a much better understanding of the view in this poem. Thanks Josiah!

After reading your poem I understood the poem from a different perspective. I agree with how he says that she understands that the grasshopper has to live a wild and precius life and when he says that she doesnt want to see her die. I also think that this poem is trying to get us to think about life and the things we take for granted.

It sounds to me that the person who wrote this and the person that is in the story is very observent. It also seems to me that the person is very "one" with nature. If she has the time to just sit there and watch a grasshopper eat grains of sugar out of her hand, seems like someone who has nothing else to do. It could be a little kid that is just walking in the yard, sees a grasshopper and runs back inside to get sugar so that she can observe it.
    @daniel taverna
I agree with daniel about how this poem was pretty cool. I also agree that it is a good poem to read but also a confusing one to understand. I also liked how it used all of the different things like the field and the grass but it could have been a little more descriptive on the grass and field.

  53. I really enjoyed reading this poem. I think that the author is trying to tell us that we should have fun and live life to its fullest. The author is also trying to tell us that the world is a precious place to be on and has many fun things to do on it. If we don't enjoy our lives, we won't have any joy or warmth in our lives.

  54. I think this poem was about observing nature and how wonderfully complex it is. The poem goes into detail about a little grasshopper doing things that most of us wouldn't notice. The girl thinks that since the grasshopper is so complex it had to have been created by God. The problem is she doesn't really understand who God is, which is what I think she was talking about when she said that she didn't know how to pray.

  59. I think this poem is about a person admiring the world and wondering where it all came from. They are looking at all of the details and how creative everything is and they are wondering why and how. They also seemed confused when they talked about religion. They don't know what a prayer is but they think they do know how to live. Maybe this person doesn't believe in a God so they are living life and trying to spread the freedom.

  60. I like what Leigha said about the poem. She thinks that we should also pay attention to the details like the author. She didn't say anything about the praying or creator parts but I still like the whole idea. If you ignore those few lines it does change the whole feeling of the peom. It feels much more simple than wondering about creation and just thinking about a nice summer day.

I think your right. I thought it was just about how they enjoy their everyday life but your is more accurate. After re-reading it, it looks like it is only about summer. 78. Kevin Agosto talked about the person not knowing about a religion. He said "Maybe this person doesn't believe in a God so they are living life and trying to spread the freedom." When I first read the poem I didn't ever think about it as a religions poem, but I see where Kevin’s coming from and I like it that way. So thank you Kevin for showing me a new view.

  79. I really liked this poem. There was a lot of imagery in this poem and it was calming to me. I also liked the part where the narrator says "prayer" because praying mantases are related to grasshopers right? I hope we get more poems that use imagery and hints in it.

  80. I would like to agree with Kaitlyn Henderson about this poem. It kind of does want to make you go outside and enjoy summer. It had that quality to it when it described outside. In a way this poem is motivational, motivate people to be outside and enjoy time there. There certainly was a lot of detail and because of that I was able have a picture in my mind.

I enjoyed reading this poem, it gave me some ideas of what it might be saying. In he beginning I think the poem might be describing an animal, I think might be a bird. Towards to ending it sounds like its asking what are you going to do in your lifetime. I think its telling you to enjoy your life.

Commenting on Savannah's comment, I agree with what she is saying about life being important, and that you should use it wisely. I think that in the poem when it is talking about not knowing how to pray it sounds like it might be talking about who created the world. Also with life being short and making sure you make the best of it. I fully agree with everything she said.

  83. I believe this poem is talking about how precious life is. You should use your life wisely and find value in every living thing. I also believe it is asking who created life. Life is short, so give meaning to each moment

    @savannah
I really liked what you said about this poem. I totally agree that that this poem is talking about how precious life is. I think that the author really wants the readers to think about how lucky we are to have such beautiful things surrounding us. I also agree what you said about the end of the poem is asking who created this beauty.

  84. I think this poem explains that the person doesnt know whatelse to do with their life. Maybe because they already succeeded in what they wanted to succeed in. This poem also explains how at the end when you accomplish many things you will ask yourself many questions. As if when your finish you wont know whatelse to do. This poem was a good poem for the end of the school year.

  85. I agree with Ashley. I read the poem and I wrote what i received from it, but then I read Ashley Pilgrims comment and I understood what she meant. I think she is right when she says that the person in the poem talks about how different they are. I read the poem again and I thought about what she said, I really like her opinion. I also like this poem explaining how different a person can be by comparing an insect..it shows how different a person can be.

  88. I think that this poem is abou how beautiful this earthis. I believe that the person is asking who wo8ld have the imagination to creat such beautiful things. I also believe that the person is saying that everyone needs to cherish our earth. But I really thing that this person really wants to know who created everything.

I agree with Salvador Juca. This poem was a little weird but you could still see the meaning. I agree when he says we should enjoy life. Thank you Mr. Juca for this window of insight.

  91. I believe that this poem reflects on life. In general I think that this poem reminds me of how much we have learned this year. Just as we learn, the grasshopper has to learn also on how to live life. Most of all I think the author is saying how beautiful life is. I really thought that this poem was a very good one and also would be a good one to discuss in class.

  92. Savannah, I really liked how you put this poem into your own words. I like how you put the words "How precious life is" this really made me go over the poem a lot. I really think that we should look at how much we have that we don't deserve and to always live life to the fullest. Also make sure that we don't think for one split second that life is not something that we should be careful about.

  93. This poem is about life and how short it is to be depressed and sorrow. It also means that you should enjoy the little things in life and not worry about anything else except for living it to the fullest. This poem has taught me a new lesson in life, and its to care about the small things and enjoy them because my clock is ticking down. Even though we already passed new years, my new year resolution is to live life.

I agree with Hearn because he read my mind and said that life is to short to be sad. We should enjoy little things instead of the complicated things. I also agree with him because of the fact that he said that we should spend our time wisely. I also like the way he said we should pay attention to things such as a bug and study its form of nature.

  95. I think that this poem is talking about life. Life is to short to just simply pass it by. Take each day and live it to the fullest. Don't live by a set of rules; live life to it's fullest.

  96. I agree with Savannah. Life is precious so dont limit yourself to rules. Value everything including yourself. Live life to it's fullest

  97. I believe this poem is basically saying to just make the most out of life. We shouldn't waste our lives because after all, we only have one life to live. I also think the poem is saying to enjoy the little things in life; not just the big amazing things. I also think it means that you shouldn't be depressed.

I completely agree with you. The poem is saying that life is very precious and we shouldn't waste it. I think it's saying to live life to the fullest as well. I agree with you that it's saying to value EVERYTHING also.

  99. I think this poem was manily about nature. I thought the poem was ok. I had to read the poem more than once to understand it. I thought the poem was explaing how we group up in the school year, but just saying it through nautre. For example, when the poem was talking about spreading your wiings open and flying away. This poem made me think harder and longer.

  100. I some what agree with Savanaha. I agree on the part where ahe said she thought the poem was talking about apreciating life. what I don't agree on is when she said she thought the poem was aking who created life. For the most part I agree with her. Savannah some what helped me understand it better.

  101. I believe this poem means just like a grasshopper's instincts are to hop around and flap it's wings, so is someone's intstinct to fall down in the grass by themselves and put their hands together in prayer. But as this person doesn't know exactly what a prayer is, neither do they know what life really is about if not about the small things. They don't know who made life, but they do know that there's a reason, and that reason could be to just enjoy what you have and use what you know to the best of your ability.

  102. Ashley Pilgrim,
I agree that it seems like the grasshopper could be the person who wrote the poem. She understands that that particular animal is so unlike every other creature. She has realized that she is like that in her own world, and although she doesn't know exactly why....she just goes along with it any way. Just like she just goes along with falling into the grass and trying to pray.

  103. I think that this poem expresses the authors appreciation for life. This reminds me about the expression "take time to watch the snails" because the author is taking time to watch the grasshopper. You need to use your time wisely and do not rush it by. Give every moment meaning.

I think your comment was very enlightening. I agree that this poem is about life. However, I think that it is more about experiencing life than looking back on how far one has come. The poem was pretty deep though, so it can be interpreted any way. Good job!

I thought that this poem has a good meaning to it. Its right we do need to use our time wisely and doing somethinrg fun and worth while. If you waste time you might miss something important. The real problem with teenagers is time manegment.

    @ Hannah Mckeel
We need to let life go by and not rush it, cause if you rush it something might happen. Here is a a saying that I go by, " God has a way of throwing curve balls and when He does throw them don't duck you just might miss something special that God has in plan for you. So take life like in a head-on colision." Here is another saying, " The past is history, the future is a mystory, and the present is a gift, that's why it's called the present.

  107. This poem is very deep! It goes from talking about the complicatedness of not only the human body, but also the animal body too. Then it talks about religion and how they are not really sure how to pray the right way. Then it starts talking about, what I think, is just stop thinking about the future, stop complaining about the past, but to just live in the moment and think about just relaxing. I think the meaning of this poem is just to think about how to thank and appriciate the delicate life of the earth.

  108. I agree with Athene mostly. I also think that the poem isnt all about religion but it is the main focal point in the poem. Now that I think about it does all have something to do with realzing their is someone bigger and more powerful out there. I still think it has something to do with not rushing life, but just taking a moment and enjoy the senic route.
